Jamaal Charles to undergo another knee surgery

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is undergoing surgery on Wednesday afternoon to examine his right knee.

The Chiefs gave an update on their all-time franchise leader in rushing yardage on Wednesday. Head coach Andy Reid and trainer Rick Burkholder announced that Charles will have another surgery on his right knee, the same one which was injured last year.

Burkholder said Charles is dealing with pain in both knees, but the right one appears to be particularly bothersome. At this point, it will be Dr. James Andrews doing what Burkholder called an exploratory surgery, with the fear being that his meniscus is torn.

If that’s the case, he would likely be done for the season. If the meniscus simply needs to be shaved down, he could come back for the end of the year (Week 17, specifically) and the postseason. Obviously, that is best-case scenario.

Without Charles in the backfield, Kansas City will turn to Spencer Ware to continue carrying the full load. However, Ware is dealing with the remnants of a concussion, and so we will have Charcandrick West leading the way against the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday afternoon.

Hopefully Charles can make a return at some point in 2016, but it seems unlikely at this point.
