The Kansas City Chiefs are trying all comers at both positions in the defensive backfield.

Marcus Cooper and Jamell Fleming have worked mostly at safety this off-season hoping to improve their play off coverage instead of in press man. The Chiefs also brought in journeyman safety Stevie Brown who played both linebacker and safety in college at Michigan. This team is trying to find a secondary that will limit teams in this pass heavy NFL especially without giving up the big play downfield.

The loss of players like Sean Smith, Tyvon Branch, and Husain Abdullah make that difficult to accomplish but the team appears to believe that they can develop young players to fill those shoes.

For training camp, it has already been reported that fan favorite safety Eric Berry will not be reporting as he was not inked to a long term contract before the deadline and has yet to sign his franchise tender.

The Chiefs aren’t worried about Berry holding out into the season but it is completely understandable that a guy who is about to play the season that will define his worth for possibly the rest of his career doesn’t want to risk a camp injury. That leaves an open spot in camp for players like Daniel Sorensen, Eric Murray, and Fleming to make their mark.
