The Kansas City Chiefs are giving a rookie tryout to a very notable name.

Sometimes, sports can be a very cool thing. In Kansas City, few names are bigger than that of Derrick Thomas, the brilliant outside linebacker who played for the Chiefs between 1989-99, amassing 126.5 sacks and a Hall of Fame career. Currently, one of Thomas’ sons, Donnell Alexander, is getting a tryout with the Chiefs.

Alexander is a running back who went to the university of Akron and went undrafted this year. At 5-foot-11 and 219 pounds, he is a sledgehammer who pounded away for 499 yards and three touchdowns last season on 4.7 yards per carry. Alexander began his college career at Colorado State for two seasons before transferring to Akron, where he played one year.

The reality is that Kansas City is loaded at the running back spot and Alexander’s only real chance to make even the practice squad is to be incredible on special teams. Regardless, it’s awesome that the son of a legend in this town is getting to wear the same helmet his father once put on.
