The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Mike Williams to a one-year deal.
Everyone knows the Chiefs need a compliment to Jeremy Maclin, and general manager John Dorsey is looking under every rock. On Monday, Kansas City signed veteran receiver Mike Williams to a one-year deal, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Williams cracked the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick in 2010 out of USC, and played four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Williams had 964 yards as a rookie before notching 996 yards in 2012. However, Williams would watch his career go down the drain from there. He signed a six-year, $40.25 million deal before 2013 but only played six games that year, before being traded to the Buffalo Bills.
Playing for his hometown team, Williams caught eight passes for 142 yards and a touchdown in nine games before being released. He has not played in the NFL since. Frankly, I would be stunned if he isn’t more than a camp body. Maybe he authors a great comeback story, but the odds seem slim to none.
Kansas City is doing the smart thing by bringing in a bunch of guys, hoping to see one of them step up and carve out a role. That said, don’t expect Williams to be that guy.
