Should Chiefs look at Robert Griffin III?

The Washington Redskins are a grease fire within a dumpster fire. It has become almost hard to watch from a distance, with Dan Snyder and Jay Gruden ruining the franchise. One of the main casualties is becoming Robert Griffin III, who has been benched by Gruden in favor of Kirk Cousins.

At this point, there has been rampant speculation that Griffin is being shopped around the NFL, with little interest. Naturally, folks have been talking about potential destinations, with the Kansas City Chiefs coming up as a possible landing spot. Why? Because head coach Andy Reid is a quarterback whisperer and Griffin has shown that he has talent in that battered body.

So, should the Chiefs trade a late-round pick to Washington for the embattled signal-caller?

My opinion is a stern no. Griffin looked very good as a rookie in 2012, winning the NFC east and throwing for 20 touchdowns. Griffin was electric, but tore his ACL in the playoffs that season and has never been the same. Griffin was benched at the end of the 2013 for Cousins by head coach Mike Shanahan, and last year was part of a rotation with Cousins and Colt McCoy.

At this point, Kansas City has a clear starter in Alex Smith and perhaps a capable long-term backup in Aaron Murray. Murray appeared rough in training camp when I watched him, but he lit up the Tennessee Titans on Friday night. If Kansas City traded for Griffin, either Murray or backup extraordinaire Chase Daniel would need to be traded away.

The Chiefs would also have to pick up Griffin’s option next year, which is more than $15 million. There is no way Kansas City, or any NFL team, can justify paying Griffin that much money after his past two seasons.

Reid and the Chiefs would be an incredible spot for Griffin, but the same can’t be said the other way.
