Is Derrick Johnson The Best Middle Linebacker In NFL?

We have Chiefs fans have known this for quite some time but it appears some of the rest of the NFL world is starting to catch on to the fact that Derrick Johnson is really good at football. Pete Damilatis went on a bit of a Twitter rant about Johnson and suggested that if Johnson is not the best middle linebacker in the NFL then he certainly is in the discussion.

Pete notes the one thing Johnson doesn’t have on his resume is a “number one season” where he was definitely the best middle linebacker in the game. Patrick Willis seems to have always found a way to either be the number one rated middle linebacker in football or at least find himself a notch ahead of Johnson. This would seem to indicate Damilatis would give the number one spot to Willis.

But the number two spot? That’s definitely in play for Johnson.

Johnson has been the Chiefs most consistent performer on defense since jumpstarting his career in 2009, and has in many ways been the heart and soul of this franchise. He is the longest tenured Chiefs player and plays with a very team-friendly contract. It will be interesting to see what the Chiefs do after the 2015 season when both he and Jamaal Charles are scheduled to be free agents.

For now, let’s enjoy the fact that Kansas City has arguably the best middle linebacker in the game.

  • Stacy D. Smith

Best MLB? No, but definitely one of the four or five best in the league.

    • Daniel Riddick

U wild bro. Who more consistent then Dj??

      • Daniel Riddick

My point exactly Dj way too underrated

      • Stacy D. Smith

Patrick Willis, Lawrence Timmons, Navorro Bowman…

        • Daniel Riddick

Patrick Willis yea and in the same breath I wouldn’t even say he’s better then dj, I see dj having more of a effect. Dj’s more involved with that kc defense for years. The other two you named, that’s a negative.

        • Daniel Riddick

News flash, Derrick Johnson has the edge on Patrick Willis when it comes to nfl career stats, look it up for yourself if you don’t believe me.
Dj is the best underrated MLB

          • Stacy D. Smith

Willis has more tackles in two fewer seasons. He’s also only trailing Johnson by 2 career sacks and 4 interceptions. The numbers don’t bear you out.

          • Daniel Riddick

Numbers don’t lie. I like Willis too, but dj a animal.

          • Daniel Riddick

Look check this out case and point, you know why willis won’t catch up to dj? Because dj stays consistent. How u gonna catch up to a nigga, if the nigga you tryna catch stays consistent? It makes it a lil difficult wouldn’t you say?

          • A1 Yola

Bro. I know you know other words to describe your fellow Man. Leave that ignorance in the past Brother.

          • Daniel Riddick

Right! You absolutely correct. Can make a point which I did, without the negativity.

          • Daniel Riddick

Not to mention as stated earlier Johnson came in the league before willis, so Johnson been doing this for some years now.

  • berttheclock

He remains the heart and soul of the Chiefs’ defense.

  • Alex Rodman

He is one of the more good, consistent mlb’s

  • aelder027

    I’d say he’s # 2 behind Patrick Willis

    • Daniel Riddick

      Buggin. Dj is #1

  • Daniel Riddick

Derrick Johnson is the best if you ask me!

    • A1 Yola

DJ has 22 sacks and 11 interceptions. Patrick Willis has 20 and 7 interceptions. They seem almost even in that regard, considering DJ had a 2yr. head start. I would still pick DJ though.

  • Nick the Kick

I’d have to rank the Boston College kid from Carolina whose name I can’t spell as #1, but after him give me DJ who is faster and better in coverage than Willis and doesn’t play next to Bowman who might be just as good.

    • berttheclock

You mean the poor fellow who is lost to the Panthers for the season due to a torn ACL, Alonso?

      • David Kaneva

Alonso plays for the Bills, the Panthers player he was referring to is Luke Kuechly

        • berttheclock

Of course. Just shows out of shape I have become in the off season. Thanks

  • e_racer

DJ isn’t the best in the entire league, but he is one of the best, and he brings it every game. There are no let downs.
