Kansas City Chiefs Rumors: Chiefs, Justin Houston Working On New Contract

It appears the Chiefs want to get the ball rolling now on a new deal for Justin Houston. Jason La Canfora tweets the team has already begun talks with the All-Pro linebacker, but there in nothing imminent.

A new deal would probably not mean much for the 2014 cap situation as Houston has a very low cap number as things stand. Over the Cap has his number set at $1.556 million for the 2014 season, so there isn’t a lot of room to be gained. However, having him locked up for 2015 and beyond would be tremendous. Houston is scheduled to be a free agent this time next year.

Keep in mind the 2015 salary cap is expected to increase by over $10 million from 2014 and then move over the $150 million mark by 2016. There is a lot of room for the Chiefs to work with starting in 2016 so Kansas City does have the future salary cap space to lock him up.

Smart move here. Chiefs know he cant hit the market because every team would be after him. Alex Smith too although not every team would be after him but he would still be wanted. The more I think about it the more I believe the Chiefs go defense at 23 in the the Draft short of trading down of course. Hali will be up at the end of 2016 and who knows if the chiefs keep him. But look at D-Ware. He was way more dominant than Hali and he is starting to break down with 2 straight injury plagued seasons and a 16 million dollar cap hit this year at 32 years old. Im sure the chiefs are looking with a keen eye from afar and seeing they have a similar situation here in kc. Im not trying to turn this into an Hali story because locking up Houston is great. It jus made me think of the other side of our 3-4 obviously and Hali’s struggles even when he was on the field. Its a big year for him but as I said I doubt chiefs would wanna go into 2016 without Hali’s potential successor on the roster and this year is a great year to look at that guy. Maybe even Dion Jordan from Miami since he is so young and a fit and is relatively cheap considering he is 21 or 22. Hmm Ben could you see a Dion Jordan/Brandon Albert sign and trade?

Houston, Poe and Berry are the must lockups for the Chiefs defense.

Draft dee ford. Tell Tamba to gain about 30 pounds and play him inside. We could get a pass rush from our DEs then!!!
