Matt Cassel Signs With Minnesota Vikings

Watch your back, Christian Ponder.

Former Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel has signed with the Minnesota Vikings, according to multiple reports.

I am not sure who had this first but I am giving credit to Jay Glazer because ESPN never does it.

This is a great move for Cassel. Ponder has anything but a stranglehold on the starting position in Minnesota. While the youngster may have the edge, Cassel could certainly find himself in a starting role again should Ponder struggle.

Remember, the Vikings were a playoff team last season even with ho-hum play from Ponder. Then, in the playoffs, Ponder was out with an injury and the Vikings’ were SOL because they didn’t have a viable backup option.

Cassel, for all his faults, is certainly a viable backup option. The Vikings have a strong running game, which is exactly what Cassel needs to flourish.

It will be interesting to see how Cassel plays in another system. We certainly wish him all the best in Minnesota…unless of course the Chiefs and Vikings play in the Super Bowl next season.

Actually, I am going to go put some money on that right now.

    Hello…Who are his receivers????

    • Priest4Prez

His job is to hand the ball off to that Peterson guy

    • berttheclock

Well, I don’t think Joe Webb is going to switch.

  • Da Menace

Figures bastards were in trade discussions with us but realized we would cut him anyway, oh well. We are a better team without him.

  • chiefridgy

I knew no one would trade us for him knowing that we were going to cut him anyways.

Yeah that and his contract killed the trade hopes I think.

NFL.com credits Glazer, as well. They, also, added MC chose the Vikings over the Bucs. Interesting comments from several fans of the Vikings at the Star-Trib who believe MC will beat out Ponders, or at least, take his place by mid-season. However, their GM has stated Ponders is the starter. Of course, he is the same GM who stated he would not trade Harvin.

Possible. Ponder could also get a spark because of Cassel. Frankly, I think Ponder might just be a less experienced version of Cassel.

So glad to hear this, I never thought Cassel lived up to his potential. He backed up the Heisman trophy winning Matt Leinert at USC, then backed up freakin Tom Brady in New England. When he was brought to KC, he was welcomed with a flawed system and inconsistent coaching (not to mention lack of support from the fans). Here’s to you Matt Cassel, good luck in Minnesota.

      Classy comment.

  • Michael Shaw

Um, forgive me if i am wrong, but didn’t Matt have a strong running game here as well????? JC!!!???? Just sayin……………………….

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

He did and when it worked well, he played ok.

  • ArrowFan

The Vics still owe us for Allen. And now they pulled the same just wait he will get cut so we don’t need to trade card we wanted for Smith. At least the Bucs are left standing and wonder if they should have just made a trade.

    • KCMikeG

And the Cards are left out too. I don’t think the Vikes owe us anything being we got Charles and Albert for Allen. I would make that trade over and over.

What I find hilarious is the Viking Fansided page doesnt even mention this.

    What is the contract numbers?
