Alex Smith To The Chiefs For A 2nd Round Pick, According To Reports

According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, the Kansas City Chiefs will trade for San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith as soon as they are able, when the new league year starts on March 12th.

From Glazer:

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com is confirming the report and is citing a source that the pick is for at least a second-round draft pick.

Wow. This is huge news. I thought this trade was definitely going to happen but I did not think that it would be for a pick as high as a second-rounder.

This means the Chiefs are certainly not going to be taking a QB in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. I would be shocked if they did.

This means Alex Smith is the Chiefs’ guy for the foreseeable future.

We are covering the fallout from this news. Stay tuned to Arrowhead Addict as we will bring you more as this information continues to leak out.

UPDATE: Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the deal is for a 2013 2nd-round pick and a conditional mid-round 2014 pick.

Welcome to the Alex Smith led KC Chiefs. I am stunned. I am guessing now that they will take a qb in round 3 or 4. That sound right to everyone else? Who does that leave for us to take? Does anyone else think they had to outbid other teams, or that they truly believe that this is the qb of the future. You don’t give up a 2nd unless this is the qb of the future.

    • Ron White

EJ Manual is iffy to be there at top of third. Tyler Bray should be there in the top of Third with Landry Jones and Zak Dysert possibly availible in the bottom of Third/Top of 4th

      • nathan82

Out of those I guess I am hoping for EJ Manual.

        • berttheclock

Manuel has said he would love to play for the Chiefs.

    • Michael Shaw

I am ok with Bray, Landry Jones or Manual, but I honestly don’t know about Dysert.

    • sigh

manuel WONT BE THERE for those who dont get that. BRAY wont be there either.
KC will be taking another position in rd 3.

  • Tim

    Barf City…. Booooooooooooooo.. What a freaking joke….

    • KeeVee

Let me guess you were expecting that joke of geno smith to lead our team when e couldn’t even lead wvu lmao

    • PunjabiPete

And Geno Smith would have done…..what? I’m happy with this pick, and would honestly rather have Alex Smith than Nick Foles. Give the guy a chance.

  • t.e.surprise@gmail.com

2nd round? Are you kidding me? Wow!! I am speechless!!!!! KC paid way to much. Smells like the Cassell trade all over again. Hope Smith fairs better than Cassell. Go Chiefs!!!!!

    • Tysaiah Franklin

I feel the same way. Why not give up a third this yr and a third nxt yr

      • Stacy D. Smith

One third this year or shove it San Fran. They would’ve taken it.

        • ArrowFan

I agree we just gave them a gift. Maybe we can get someone to trade for Cassel.

          • Tysaiah Franklin

Only team willing to bite a cassel trade would be the jets n I seriously doubt they’d take that.

          • ArrowFan

            Cardinals?

        • Ron White

Yea….Why didn’t John and Andy think of that first…..

          • Stacy D. Smith

I’m not sure that matters at this point because they gave up an R2 this year and an R3 next year to acquire him (reportedly). That’s the move of a desperate HC/GM. It’s probably better that we assume they’re infallible though.

    • Stacy D. Smith

Utter desperation. No way in Hell I would’ve given up multiple picks for Alex Smith. I for damn sure wouldn’t have given them my R2. It’s effectively the top pick in the second round. This means they’re going to extend him. It probably also means that Branden Albert is done here. I’m sick.

Had they given up the R3 (only) and still drafted an EJ Manuel in the second round, I’d be happy. Everything would still be possible. This seems like a step in the wrong direction for this franchise.

      Strike one.

      • Ron White

Think we paid too much? Think about this….

Here are our 2nd Round Picks for the last ten years? Anyone on this list you would not trade straight up for Alex based on the fact we do not have a QB on our roster right now? Maybe Flowers….but if you don’t have a QB? And you can’t jump all in with a Rookie QB before the season even starts….That would be very dumb. We are in a bad place and unfortunately we had to make this move. But we did not pay too much. There is nobody that should be available that will be worth more than Alex Smith at the top of the second round this year. If you think there is you must be delusional.

One Pro Bowl player in this list and he is a punter. Most valuable is Flowers but not as valuable as a starting QB for a team that does not have one.

Name one Rookie at any position that will be available at the top of the 2nd that will bring more Wins than Alex Smith? Not saying he is the long term answer but best available talent until we get long term answer.

        12 Jeff Allen
        11 Rod Hudson
        10 Dexter McCluster
        09 None (Matt Cassel)
        08 Flowers
        07 Turk McBride
        06 Bernard Pollard
        05 Dustin Colquitt
        04 Junior Saivi
        03 Kawika Mitchell

        • Spencer

anyone considering if we were smart and drafted Geno smith rather then waste a pick on a backup Qb just like Cassel well yea…literally Dorsey just went into my doghouse, another Pioli frickin idiot running the show, lets get a retread Qb that couldn’t start over a sophmore qb that had only 2 starts middle of the season and is nothing more then a game manger (what we all called Cassel) and who will likely fail, Dorsey is such a smart alec (really a retard imo) we hired another idiot Gm that doesn’t want to “waste” a pick on a 1st rnd caliber QB 1st overall so he wasted a 2nd rnd pick on a 5th rnd caliber qb….a game manger qb to be considered the best a qb can ever be should only ever go as high as the 5th, thus we overpaid for a should be backup qb that has no future, is another cassel, got raped by the 49ers who obviously have some sex tape of dear Mr. Hunt while we continue to get idiot Gms who are considerd “stars” where they came from in the pass where in actuality they were just the idiots backing up the genius Gms/Qbs/HCs in place there (Aaron Rodgers the packers were trying all 10 minutes nearly to trade him away, while the Patriots just got damnlucky with Brady)

          • Ron White

Wow! You sound angry…..take a chill pill. This move does not say they are set at QB. What is says is that they have a competent QB that will hold the fort while they find the right guy who may not even be in this years draft, Although they will kick the tires on at least one. I crack up everytime i read about how this Rookie QB or that one is going to be the guy right out of the box. That is rare even in light of the last couple of years. Unfortunately this is not one of those years. Bad luck not bad management.

          • Stacy D. Smith

Where are you going to get that QB now?
The best alternatives to Geno Smith will all be off the board when that 3b pick rolls around.

          • Ron White

See the fallacy is that that QB is actually in this draft. May be or may not be. It was obvious that Geno and at least the next best QB would be gone by our 2nd. There is a chance one of the ones available in the third could be the guy. Maybe or maybe not. Nobody knows. Everyone is acting like this is our only chance to get a QB…it is not. We will continue selecting until we find our guy. The sky is not falling it is only cloudy.

          • Stacy D. Smith

Neither of us knows how any of these QB’s will pan out. If that’s your argument, we also don’t know that Alex Smith will continue to play well in Kansas City (in a new environment).
The real possibility that any of the 2013 quarterback prospects could bust is not a reason to overspend for a player NOBODY wanted last offseason when there was no compensation required.

Is this our ONLY chance to obtain a QB in the draft? No.
It was the best opportunity though. Now we have to hope someone slips into the third round. That won’t matter though when we’re committed to Smith for at least three years. That guy is going to rot on the sideline.

          • Chelsii.

I think the point is KC is suppose to have the best fans in football. Everyone is really making him feel welcome. He had been nothing by successful the last 2 years and Coach Reid wanted him. That’s enough for me. Lets not all go down that slippery slope and end up like Raider fans.

          • ArrowFan

Don’t we already have a third round QB on our team? What we don’t have is a 1st round QB.

          • chiefridgy

We have a first round QB now…

          • Stacy D. Smith

Being the best fans in football doesn’t require us to acquiesce when the team makes a bad personnel decision. For the right compensation, I’d be behind the transaction. There is time still for the Chiefs to make a more reasonable offer to San Francisco. I’m going to wait patiently to see how this plays out.

          • Joe Myers

We arnt the ones on the slope they are . The situation in Oakland was al Davis doing . Hear we keep doing the same experiment hoping for different results . Witch is a definition of insanity

          • Chelsii.

You said you were done with the Chiefs. I can’t take you seriously if you don’t keep your word.

          • micah stephenson

The best fans in football demand the best product. This A.Smith trade is a move that will keep us middle of the pack.

          • micah stephenson

If the chiefs dont want us acting like raider fans then quit making Raider like personel choices.

          • Joe Myers

yur going to realize in next years draft when once again they dont select a QB that the sky IS falling . If Alex smith does good we are fucked in a franchise QB next year . If he does bad chiefs fans will come off the hinges so fast they will be forced to draft a QB with their first over all pick . I dont care about winning now I want this future chiefs fans (my son) to be set .

          • micah stephenson

Well holla at me when they find the rookie franchise QB! If its a yr or 2 from now then thats wen i will start spending money on this team again.

          • micah stephenson

Yea! What he just said! This move sucks if they dont still draft Geno Smith #1.

        • Stacy D. Smith

You don’t go throwing away R2′s because a previous regime had trouble identifying quality players in that round.

Here’s something we can all think about:
The SAME Andy Reid had a chance to have Alex Smith in Philadelphia for FREE and passed on him. Clearly the prudent thing to do is to wait a year then trade away what is essentially a late #1 for the SAME player 365 days later.

Here’s something else we can all think about:
Going back to 1993, FOUR quarterbacks have won the Super Bowl with a team they weren’t drafted by.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

          • Ron White

You do realize we need to have a competent QB for at least the next two years …Right? Are you telling me that you think any of the available QB’s in this draft is our long term answer and we should put all of our prayers behind one of them? I see this as a way to play good football while we find and develop a QB for the future. Dorsey has drafted 11 QB’s during the same time our Chiefs have drafted 2. That does not sound like a guy that puts all his marbles in one basket…(See Pioli). These move tell me they do not have confidence that any on these QB’s can come in and win right away. So they get a guy that can win while they develop someone to replace him. That is the way it works. Don’t get blinded by the last couple of years of QB’s starting out of the gate. remember that has not worked for the most part. It is still an anomaly. And I always enjoy my day. I take things and they come and realize the sky is not falling …life will be great if you let it.

          • Stacy D. Smith

This is a curious brand of logic.

I’d love to know why signing a player who was voluntarily castoff by the organization that drafted him is an unimpeachable decision, but drafting the best QB prospect in the 2013 class is foolhardy.
Simply put, how do you know that Alex Smith will be anymore competent than Geno? He certainly doesn’t have a large enough sample size to substantiate that claim.

Dorsey was NEVER in charge in Green Bay. He never had final say there. Even if we take a QB in this year’s draft the price for Alex Smith was too high. No team in the NFL wanted him just last season when he was available for free.

This news hasn’t affected my life, don’t patronize me. It’s a football decision that only influences my opinion of this football team. I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

          • sigh

you do realize KC didnt have to trade a 2nd and a 3rd to get a competent QB right? that smith’s 2011 is identical to cassel’s 2010, and that KC is giving up a 1,2 and albert for smith and a joke

          • Ron White

It was a 2nd and a conditional mid round pick. While the stats were similar the difference is Smith went to the Championship game and came back the next year and won plus had over 110 QBR. That does not sound the same to me. Hey I am not in love with Alex Smith I am just defending the decision against all the hate.

        • KCMikeG

Problem is we didn’t just give them Flowers we also gave them another #2.

        • sidibeke

Houston was a 2nd rounder, no?

          • KCMikeG

Actually he was a FREE 3rd rounder Pioli got when he traded down for Baldwin in the 1st.

          • sidibeke

Ah yes, a steal at that pick. Any other positive drug test QBs we can get in the 3rd this year?

          • KCMikeG

            Georgia LB Alec Oggletree.

      • sidibeke

Amen. Wonder what the market was like; seemed to me like SF was going to have to cut him and we could have had him for free. But a 2R?
Someone try to convince me a 2R pick for Alex Smith is not a bigger reach than taking Geno 10-15 spots higher in R1.

  • Miles Yi

    Holy. Moly.

  • Adam Sherman

For all those “good” chiefs fans who said “everyone should stop freaking out about this, it’s going to be a 4th rounder at the highest, it a no brainer! You’re also a bad chiefs fan if your furious about this possibility. weee alex smith !”

    Screw you guys.

  • Soda pop

    Seriously I am shocked!!

  • Soda pop

2nd round pick?? A high one at that!?!?!?!?

    • Danny W

It’s pretty much a low first. I bet San Fran gets themselves a quarterback with it.

  • Soda pop

I’ve been so loyal to this team for over 20 years and its shit like this that keeps us right at mediocre!! Over and over and over and over

    • Jim Harper

Big deal! I’ve been a fan for over 50 years. I watched them lose Super Bowl I and win Super Bowl IV. Just admit that Reid has a lot more experience than we do and until proven wrong we need to trust and support him regardless.

      • Michael Shaw

        Well said Mr. Harper!

      • Joe Myers

shut up “big deal” it is a big deal 20 years or 50 . Respect that . Reid and Dorsey and need to be fired . Smith is a bad pick up you will see that vary soon I an out keep your Alex smith hahahahaha Alex smith yea keep him and the chiefs losing ways . You know how much of my time and money thos traders cost me . THEY ARE ALL TRADERS

        • KCMikeG

Traitors is the word I believe you are grasping for there.

      • sigh

pioli has more experience than we do
matt millen has more experience than we do
enough of this blind trust BS

  • berttheclock

Whatever any fan thinks of Alex Smith on the playing field, according to a recent article at sfgate, which picked up a Boston Globe study, he is a solid citizen. His foundation to fund foster teens through college has contributed 91 per cent of its funding to attain its mission statement. There are several top athletes with foundations who have failed to even contribute 65 per cent to such. Alex Smith has personally met with the 23 he has helped to graduate from San Diego State U. His funding has paid for tuition, books and such for a period of 5 years each. One reason given for the large amount going to them is much of the money has come directly from Alex Smith. In addition, he has spent hours working with the legislators in California for better conditions for foster children
This young man is a Mensch.

    • Soda pop

Are you serious?? I think Matt cassel is a hell of a guy off the field but are we going for off the field here???

      • berttheclock

I believe Alex Smith will be a fine bridge QB and would love to see the Chiefs upgrade their offensive line. I really have faith in both Dorsey and Reid knowing far more about the NFL than many fans think they do.

        • armychiefj

Did you have the same faith in Pioli 4 years ago?

          • Michael Shaw

Yes, I think most everyone did! Though some of you will refuse to admit that now.

          • Danny W

I had faith in the guy until Tyson Jackson, it’s documented on here thoroughly.

        • Jim Harper

I am with you here. I will admit that on the surface this looks like a questionable move, but I am sure there is much more to this than meets the eye. We would all be well served to trust Andy here.

  • cpachecoiii

Now that they got Alex Smith, and don’t need to draft a QB with the first pick, how do you know that they may not try to trade down AND get a 2nd rounder from someone else who DOES want Geno Smith?

    • berttheclock

That would, probably, be Buffalo at eight.

      • cpachecoiii

Exactly. Also have seen the Browns at six are very interested in Geno Smith as well.

      • cpachecoiii

There are a bunch of possibilities. The fans who just automatically crap their pants every time the Chiefs do ANYTHING are annoying!

    • Michael Shaw

I actually am split on this idea. I REALLY want Dee Milliner with our #1. That of course is assuming they actually sign Albert long term.

  • Soda pop

Report says 2nd this year and 2nd next year!!!

    • Jim Harper

      No it does not!

  • Rob932

If this is true, I might have to look for a new team to root for…I can’t handle being a Chiefs, Royals and MU fan, its a constant hope to just be mediocre.

    • Michael Shaw

Goodbye! Not so nice hearing from you!!

  • Arrowhead Magic

I have no problems bringing in Alex Smith but a second round pick is too much for him period, I was thinking like a fourth rounder at most. Where are we supposed to draft this qb that’s supposed to learn from alex now? Not until at least the third round. Who will be there in the third round? If we’re lucky EJ Manuel, if we’re not then probably nobody. Guess we know who’s starting at qb next year. Welcome to the Chiefs Alex Smith.

    • Michael Shaw

I could see them making a move to get back into the 2nd to get Tyler Bray, Landry Jones or EJ Manual (Whom has said he wants to play for us!!)

      • Arrowhead Magic

That would make sense, or they could trade back from number 1 and maybe swap 1st rounders and get a second rounder from someone. But if we do make a play for a qb in the second round I hope its EJ. How can you not like a player who wants to play for your team?

  • Priest4Prez

A 2nd really??? I hope they plan to trade down that 1st round pick and get a later 1st and a 2nd with it.

    • Stacy D. Smith

Who are they going to trade with?

      • Priest4Prez

Stacy….I don’t know man. Maybe the Jaguars want Geno bad enough or perhaps someone’s draft stock rises to a point past teams like the Steelers or Falcons. Someone who needs some help to get over a hump of sorts. Drop back; take a late 1st/early 2nd…still get E.J. Manuel. I can’t believe that Alex is the end-all-be-all for us; it smells of ineptitude.

        • Michael Shaw

Agreed! But I think we stay at #1 and either take Joeckel to replace Albert if he is not signed, which I am hoping he is, or we should definitely go after Dee Milliner! I am telling you, the kid will work great opposite of Brandon Flowers!!!

      • KCMikeG

I heard that Philly wants Joeckel and would consider trading Foles & their #4 1st round pick. Who knows??

  • Adam Sherman

    Welp Alex Smith.

5-6 more years of average QB play in Kansas City -
Good enough football team to go about 8-8, maybe 10-6 at best -
If KC fields the best defense on the planet perhaps we can win a playoff game -
Possibility of winning a Superbowl, GONE -

Possibility of ever drafting the 1st QB overall during that time period, GONE -

    • berttheclock

In recent years the Niners have made it to the SB and happened to win on occasion with QBs which were taken in the 3rd round and a former Number One from another team who was picked up by the Niners for a 2nd and a 4th and had to sit on the bench for many games. Plus, CK was taken in the 2nd round after the Niners worked a trade with the Broncos to move up in the draft. There is no set rule in the NFL that all franchise type QBs have to be taken in the 1st round and developed by said team.

      • Michael Shaw

        Agreed!!!

    • Don417

Please. Dont tell me you think Geno Bust Smith was gonna get to a Super Bowl, you must be joking.

      • Joe Myers

dont sit hear and mock ass Alex smith is a matt cassel all over again . And yea I gave him two SB by the end of his career .

        • dominicscarlatti

What in God’s name are you trying to say in that trainwreck of a first sentence ?

          • Joe Myers

your an idiot or a fan either way get off my nutts

      • sigh

no. but you it also takes away any hopes of a QB high next year. they will extend smith. thats the point, it didnt have to just be geno, they also cant take a kaepernick, as 34 is gone, no manuel, no wilson, no 4th or 5th best guy.
        they get alex smith

      • Danny W

Your little nick name is going to make you look incredibly stupid if the opposite is true, why so much hate towards the player’s play?

    • Outback Chief

I don’t care if we get the first QB off the board I just want them to draft a stud for the next 10 yrs 16 playoff wins and 3 superbowls

  • ZWal93

Alex Smith has 19 wins over 1 1/2 years, throwing out the fluke that was 2010, the Chiefs have 19 wins total in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012 combined

    • Michael Shaw

But do you like the trade?

      • KCMikeG

Still too expensive unless we are getting later round picks back.

  • Brandon Mecham

I would rather go 2-14 for the next 5 years with a bust rookie than 8-8 for the next 5 with alex smith.

    • berttheclock

So, you are on the lose for Clowney bandwagon for next year, eh?

      • micah stephenson

If Clowney is the best QB in next yrs draft. I want him.

        • berttheclock

He is a DE from South Carolina and has taken out an insurance policy to protect him financially because all pundits are raving he will be the Number One pick of the 2014 draft.

          • KCMikeG

But won’t we still need our franchise QB next year??

    • Don417

      That’s just stupid.

    • Stacy D. Smith

Couldn’t agree with you more. Geno’s ceiling is higher.

    • Adam Sherman

Amen brother have to take a chance or wallow in mediocrity for eternity.

    • boscocfh

shit in the afc west 8-8 would put us in the playoffs some years. ill take that over 2-14 any day.

      • micah stephenson

8-8 & a 1 & done in the playoffs. Ill pass on that!

    • dominicscarlatti

      Your comment speaks for itself…

    • Derek

Exactly! Swing away til you get it right and quit settling for “passable” this thougt process is unexceptable and after how bitter I was they didn’t even make a play for Peyton last off-season then I can officially say I’m through with this team the first game we play against geno and get smoked depending on the team he plays for by 21-28 points wahoo! Kc continues failure. Screw the chiefs. Im so close to hating football all together now

  • http://twitter.com/cdiamp3 Chris D.

I thought at least we would have traded for a 3rd rounder. It’s still a upgrade over the current QB’s on our roster.

    • Stacy D. Smith

That made perfect sense given that we have two #3′s this year.
I’d have NOTHING bad to say if we’d traded the R3 only.

      • Danny W

That round three is really a second as high as it is and because two teams don’t have picks in those rounds.

  • disqus_Rxx0EqDtqU

I love this move. You have to take a chance otherwise we would have nothing. Now i say we trade our first round pick to the Jets for Darell Revis and the Jets #9 pick and pick up the best OT. Try to sign albert and Bowe but Bowe for sure and if you cant sign albert let him walk. Then draft the best qb in the third round, then for depth. Our team would look damn good next year!!! What do you guys think?

  • tm1946

No problem with trading for Smith. Just let it effect one year’s draft only.

Not a great draft year anyway, so get a starting QB is fine But not multiple year’s picks.

Just one voice but if it works out the way Reid plans, we will be fine.

For what;s it is worth, Cassel trade was an attempt to get a decent QB on the roster, did not work but that is the breaks of the game. The GM rolled the dice and crapped out on that one. We will do better this time around.

  • armychiefj

I’m done. The chiefs are vastly overpaying for someone’s backup (again). Reid and Dorsey are making the same move that Pioli and Haley did. We will be in the same spot in 4 years with Reid and Dorsey run out on a rail. I’m sick of it. I would have been happy to fail with any of the QBs that we might have taken in the 1st or even 2nd round this year, at least that would have been bold (ala Pete Caroll with Wilson move last year or Redskins taking 2 QBs). This is trash.

    • Stacy D. Smith

This will cost them their jobs if they’re wrong. They have four years to make this work. They better be right.

      • micah stephenson

If Geno is better than Alex Smith then Dorsey and Ried shud b fired after yr 1!

        • Ron White

So you think Geno as a rookie will play better than Alex Smith has the last couple of years? Really? Maybe 3 years from now but not next year. John and Andy are safe

          • Adam Sherman

You are the only A-whole out here stating your OPINIONS as fact. You sound stupid and arrogant Ron White.

          • Ron White

            Kettle meet Black

          • Joe Myers

            agreed

          • Danny W

Ron kids are coming out of college ready to ball. Russell Wilson, RG3 and Andy Luck just last year.

          • boscocfh

that was last years class. not this years class. Just cause those guys did good dont mean that this class will too. If geno came out last year he would have been a 2nd round pick in that class of qbs. All the geno addicts on here would be tearing him apart next year if we drafted him and he played like shit. I know we need a qb and i think this move gives us the best chance to win right now cause whos to say geno wouldnt need a couple of years to be good in the nfl.

          • Joe Myers

just because last years class was good does not mean this years class will not be !!!!

      • Ron White

You really don’t think they are banking on Smith for the next four years do you? They need him only until they find the right guy. This group drafts QB regularly not like the old group. They will find one. It is not their fault there isn’t one in this years draft. The fans cannot will one of this years to be the guy. I believe there will be one QB that will be productive out of this group but I am not sure which one.

        • Stacy D. Smith

Actually I do. He’s already under contract for the next two seasons. Investing an R2 and a future pick is a big time commitment. That means they’re going to extend his deal. They have hitched their wagon to Smith for the next 3 to 4 years. Same thing Pioli did with Cassel. He already had him locked up for a year. He should’ve evaluated him first. It wasn’t the Cassel trade that stunk, it was giving him that contract before he ever took a snap for this team.

This time the trade stinks too. And they’re going to give him an extension.

          • Ron White

Dorsey does not = Pioli. You should go back and look at the track record of Drafting QB’s (11) at Green Bay in the last 10 years while they have had 2 of the best QB’s in the league starting for them. Dorsey is not going to stand pat on Smith. Even Alex knows they are already working to find somebody to replace him. And when they get him on the roster and he shows that he brings us a better chance to win…then they will pull the trigger. In the new NFL that is the way is works. In the old staunch NFL you would be correct but not today.

          • Stacy D. Smith

All of that is of no consequence to 2013. Dorsey never had the final decision in Green Bay. We don’t know who made the decision to pull the trigger on those quarterback prospects.
You tell me how they’re going to hedge their bet with Smith and I’ll be quiet. What quarterback is going to be available in the late part of the third round? Don’t worry, I’ll wait.

          • Spencer

to add on, neither did Pioli ever pull the trigger, Belchick did, we got two Gms in a row (Pioli and Dorsey) who i doubt had any major opinion on who to draft when it came to, (they got credit for another mans work) to be honest, if we seriously give up a 2nd and another pick for a 1-2 yr renteal (or what he should be at MOST) then Hunt seriosuly needs to re-evaluate Dorsey immediately…i’m sorry, but Hunt has been apart of this franchise since birth, he ought to know what doesn’t work (trading for Qbs that can’t start in a prior spot, give high draft picks up for, and it also happens Alex couldnt start over a sophmore qb that played 2 games before Alex was officially benched for good)….I would seriously consider coming on in, stopping this trade (isn;t official until march 12th) end this madness and force him to draft Geno, if he wants to leave so be it, it’s time we don’t get an idiot Gm…

If he also lets Albert go and gets a tackle first round overall then Dorsey is truly pathetic…gives up a 2nd rnd pick for a Cassel 2.0 (game manager that won’t ever win anything big for any team ever, let alone be any good) and swapped a top 10-5 LT in this league with a rookie LT for no reason other then to save money and screw the franchise over….get rid of this fool…i’m sick of this franchise…

          • dominicscarlatti

I like A. Smith, but agree that we have overpaid for him. However, if there is ANY uncertainty about Albert’s back, the intelligent move would be to let him walk and draft Joeckel (or Fisher). It’s not about saving money at this point, it’s about salary-cap flexibility.

If you think Alex Smith is “Cassel 2.0″ then you obviously haven’t seen him play for the Niners this season or last, and you’re certainly not qualified to call Dorsey a “fool” and call for his head a few weeks into the job.

          • Ron White

Ok I will but first I want to point out that I would like the Chiefs to reach for Geno in the first but I think we can agree that that is not likely. Secondly I think we can agree that Dorsey had a large impact on the decisions made in Green Bay but did not make any decisions by himself. My point is that is the culture he came from and he is most likely to continue. To your point on who is available in the TOP of the 3rd rd (We still have that pick) I am not liking the choices much. I see Bray who is a project with big time arm and Landry Jones late 3. Zac Dysert in 4. None of those excite me. It is possible but not probable that EJ will be there at top of 3 at least according to some of the rankings but I really do not think he will make it out of the second. Lastly I was not trying to offend you or patronize you. Just following up on your Have a Nice Day….sorry if you took it wrong…was not intended.

          • Scott Mahurin

I’m sorry, but the loss of the 34th pick is HUGE. We just lost a starting DB with this trade. We could have had AS for a third. Drafted Geno and an elite DB. Now we have a backup QB, probably a DE, and a hole in our secondary. Serious fuck up Dorsey…I am shocked and dismayed.

          • Danny W

Hopefully they hedge their bet ala Seattle, and San Fran. I bet you money San Fran takes a QB with that second round pick we just gave them. A guy’s gotta hope anyway.

      • Derek

My guess would be Hunt gave them 3-5 year deals to be in KC….personally draft Geno or be gone. I hope they’re both run out in 2 years or 6-10 seasons

  • berttheclock

Matthew Barrows of the Sacramento Bee is backing this Glazer report. But, the pickup of the high 2nd and a possible high 3rd in 2014 comes from Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News, of whom, Barrows sites. TK picked the Niners to defeat the Ravens 27-17 in the last SB. In addition, prior to the last NBA trade deadline he wrote a column which said the Warriors were not going to be involved with any trades. He did suggest both Jenkins and Tyler could be traded to lower the luxury tax situation, but, bought into the co-owners tweet to him that no such deal would be made. At the last moment, both were traded.
BTW, how is that Mercury News story of the drugs/Contra thingee coming?

  • http://twitter.com/biglump007 Leon Ritz

Not a fan of giving up a second round pick for him thought it would be a third but I like Smith in KC. He’s the right type of qb for Reid’s West Coast offense. He’s accurate as you can get at 70.2% completion percentage last year. He’s also smart and doesn’t make stupid throws and mistakes.

    • Stacy D. Smith

Who they traded for isn’t the problem. It’s WHAT they traded for him that bugs me.

      • micah stephenson

The Chiefs Not get n Geno Smith is wat bugs me!!!

        • PunjabiPete

Geno Smith might still be wearing a KC uniform next year. Please point me to the rule that states you may ONLY get one new quarterback a year. Also tell me where the Redskin’s sanctions are. Thanks

          • Stacy D. Smith

The Chiefs did not commit what is essentially a late #1 for Alex Smith so they could turn around and spend a high #1 on Geno Smith.

          • Danny W

Yeah unless Geno Falls into the third round then it’s not happening.

          • KCMikeG

Unless we trade our #1 to Philly for their pick at #4 and get Foles. AS, Foles, Geno & Stanzi/Tanney??

          • Danny W

Foles could be a possibility in that scenario, I’m pretty high on Tanney, accuracy is very important. They need someone to come in compete and be ready to back up if Smith falls out hurt or flames out. I don’t think Reid and Dorsey are going down with the Alex Smith ship if he happens to crumble.

    • Spencer

that is what Cassel did in New England, and in 2010, a game manger qb is nothing more then a crappy QB that needs the team around him to do great cuz he can’t win a game by himself ever…seriously we over paid major for a guy that is worth a 5th rnd draft pick at best…game managers are never drafted in the top 4 rnds because u kinda want your QB to actually have the potnetial to win a game for you, not just not lose it by himself…

    • Danny W

He had the best offensive line in the country out in San Fran. We do not. It will be an adjustment for this guy to say the least. Heres to hoping he does well.

    • Darkwolf1414

Alex Smith has only been healthy for all 16 games of the season TWICE in EIGHT years! All of a sudden he’s going to come to KC and tough it out? We got hosed!

  • Killerdoctor27

I think I’m going to be sick…. Not only did you trade for ANOTHER MATT CASSEL but you gave up ANOTHER HIGH 2nd round pick!! Guys like Brandon Flowers are the type of football players you can get with that pick!!!!! This is just like the Matt Cassel trade but only worse!! At least with that trade Mike Vrabel came with it… This is a JOKE!!! I feel now the Chiefs are happy with mediocrity and will NEVER compete for a super bowl… I don’t think I can truly express how sad and disappointed that I thought maybe, just maybe this team would change! They have not. Im sorry to say that the Chiefs are chumps! And they will remain chumps until they get people into Arrowhead that are not just content with having a well paying NFL job. The goal should be and should always be to win a Super Bowl. I just dont see it!! Get ready people this will just be the first of many stupid moves the chiefs will make in the years to come…. Sure we may win a few games with Alex Smith but just enough to be 8-8 and miss out on true star QB!! I would rather roll into 2013 with EJ Manuel or Matt Barkley under center than to waste another high 2nd pick on a guy we ALL already know has reached his peak. That 2nd round pick is like giving up a late 1st round pick!!!! This whole trade just stinks of mediocrity!! Now with the 1st pick in the 2013 draft KC selects….. A replacment rookie LT!! While teams like the 49er, Patriots, Steelers, Falcons, and Ravens sit back and chuckle.

    • micah stephenson

Yup! New GM but same ol bulshit!

  • Don417

The best part about this is no Genobust. Thank gawd!

    • micah stephenson

Yea well Geno better b a biiiiig fuckin bust! Huge bust! If not Dorsey and Ried shud b ran out of town!!!

      • PunjabiPete

Jeebus F’in Chrisco. Already? Already with the “Run them out of town if they don’t do what I want” stuff? The season hasn’t even started and you wanna run them out of town? I’m done reading your posts, you must be trolling.

        • Michael Shaw

Nope. A troll maybe, but not trolling!! LOL!!

        • micah stephenson

Its not wat i want them to do, its wat they need and haft to do

    • Danny W

Yeah he might turn out to be the next Colin Kapernick, or Russell Wilson too and play for the Raiders.

  • nathan82

I still am not in love with this trade, but now that I have calmed down a bit a thought: We should not be surprised it took a 2nd rnd pick. Matt Cassell and Kevin Kolb were worth 2nds, how can we expect Alex Smith not to be. Market demands what it demands. Also, at the very least we will see good qb play next year. We should be competitive and that means something. We will still draft a qb somewhere, and might have real depth at the position.

    • Danny W

That’s just it though Nathan, Matt Cassel, and Kevin Kolb were not worth second’s. That’s why you don’t give your second round pick, which is pretty much a late first for a guy that has had some red flags in the past. A conditional pick next year for possible second would have been reasonable depending on how the guy played. If the team that was trading for him was that sure he would pan out it shouldn’t have been a big deal. We gave a whole lot for this guy. He’s the new man in KC.

      • KCMikeG

Another training camp with no true competition. Sucks.

        • Danny W

They have to hedge their bets. Matt Moore maybe, David Garrard. I highly doubt they draft another guy, but they need to bring in another vet who can win a few games managing the football game. I would really really like them to go ahead draft another guy.

          • KCMikeG

Just read in the KC Star.com that they are going to draft a mid round QB to develop. I checked different mocks and they are showing round 4 on QB’s – Jones, Dysart, Klein, Renfree (Duke) and Matt Scott from Az – Foles back up Hmm? Unfortunately he is rising fast on the draft charts.

          • Ron White

Tyler Bray is in the area of our 3a pick on some boards. Head case project but strong arm. I could see them going for him. 3-4-5 are mid round. We have 2 picks before we get to our 4.

          • Danny W

They say the kid from Duke could be the next Manning.

    • KCMikeG

Don’t forget that AS cost us a #2 and a #2-#4 next year where Cassel & Vrabel only cost us one #2.

  • Chiefswatch

WHAT A FUCKING STUPID TRADE. FUCK THE CHIEFS.

    • Michael Shaw

wow! That is not a statement I thought I would ever see you type!!! Please read my comment to Mr or Mrs Tarrants.

  • Chris Tarrants

I have lots of chiefs gear that just went up for sale if anyone is interested! I’m out

    • Michael Shaw

Sorry to hear that. Please don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!!!!

      • Adam Sherman

Chris do you have a skirt and pom poms so Michael can go try out for the cheerleading squad?

  • ArrowFan

Way to much, way to much, way to much. All be it we did get the best FA QB of 2013. To bad we didn’t get the best one from 2012.

    • Michael Shaw

True, but I am hoping that this one can put us in a hell of a lot better position to beat the guy from 2012 than Quinn or Cassel did!!!

  • micah stephenson

Boooooo! He will get booooed more than Cassel!

    • Michael Shaw

Only if we have the same dip shit crowd attending games that Winston thought was cheering when Cassel got hurt last year!!! So I am guessing you are going to all the games this year then??……………………………Just a joke Micah, don’t take it personal!! See what I told Chief Hokie and remember it!!

      • micah stephenson

HELL KNAW!!!! IM NOT WASTING ANOTHER CENT ON THIS TEAM! Wen they grow some balls and draft a 1st rd franchise QB then I will start going to the game agian.

    • KCMikeG

Black shirts and booing to commence in St. Joseph via Save Our Chiefs. I can see it now….

      • micah stephenson

If they dont draft Geno #1 then I can dig it! Lol

        • KCMikeG

Boo Micah – that was sarcasm!!!!!!!!!

  • Chief Hokie

I think I’m going to be sick.

    • Michael Shaw

Take a deep breath my friend! You will be liking this move come December!!!!

      • Chief Hokie

Haha we’ll see buddy I’m usually pretty optimistic about the chiefs, but it’s getting pretty hard these days. I want to have faith in the new regime but i’m just so tired of cast off QBs, I just want us to draft our own guy and develop him. Better to swing for then fences than settle for mediocrity.

        • Michael Shaw

I know but when you do that you tend to strike out more often than not.

          • Chief Hokie

I’m trying to win a superbowl here man! You’ll never win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket!

          • KCMikeG

What do people remember about Babe Ruth? His strike outs or his home runs?

      • KCMikeG

        Sure hope you are right.

    • KCMikeG

You know how they say “I just threw up in my mouth a little bit”? Well I have been spraying chunks all day……

  • Ron White

Dorsey and Reid are doing exactly what they said they would do….Take the Best Player Available with their picks. At the top of the 2nd Round that player is Alex Smith. Now that does not mean they will be tied to him like Pioli was to Cassel. They will continue to draft QB’s till they get a long term answer. And oh by the way they are telling us they don’t think it will come in the first two rounds of this year. They may take a flyer on a 3rd if they believe he is BPA. Hope so….

    • Danny W

Your exactly right, I’m a disappointed we gave a second round pick but it’s not like we didn’t see this thing coming.

    • KCMikeG

What it does mean is that either he cost us $8.5M + the $3M we have to pay to cut Cassel in 2013 OR we redo his contract and are tied to him for 3-4 years unless we draft Manziel or Boyd next year and over pay AS to be a back up or pay to cut him after a year into a $20M+ contract. I’m hoping that we get EJ Manuel and won’t need to draft a QB with our top pick next year because it would be just like last year when we couldn’t afford to move up for either of the elite QB’s.

  • PunjabiPete

Welcome to Kansas City, Alex Smith. We have the most rabid, insane, demanding, uncomparably batshit fans in the league. And I’m fuckin one of em. Why haven’t you won a Superbowl for Kansas City yet?! You suck! I love you? Yes! Why am I yelling as I type? I love the pick! I hate the pick! Why did Dexter McCluster drop the ball! Matt Cassel is the reason!

So, again, let me be the first to welcome you to Kansas City.

    • Michael Shaw

Now THAT shows him how nuts we are about our boys!!!! LOL!!! Keep it coming.

    • Chelsii.

      Amen!

  • http://www.facebook.com/derek.hetu Derek Hetu

I love the Chiefs and love the fanbase, but I have to tell you that I can not get over the negative outlook everyone is showing over this move. Even if it turns out it is for a second and a conditional mid round next year I just dont see why the outcry. Maybe they are giving a little much but who knows right now. All I am saying is that everyone complained about Clark Hunt being cheap last year, and Cassel sucks, and Romeo sucks, and Pioli sucks and everyone has to go. Now Clark Hunt goes out and gets a proven winner and leader in a coach, the top GM on the market according to everyone, fires Pioli and now they have found a new QB and Cassel is on the way out. What the hell more do you people want? Will anything ever satisfy you? This move tells me that Andy Reid really likes Smith and that they are willing to go out and get what they believe will help this team. Let the guy take some freaking snaps before you pass judgement. Im pleased with the move and respect the fact that they are trying to win now. There is no guarantees in life so go after something. Happy to have Alex Smith and I think it sends a message to the locker room that this regime will do what it takes to improve this team.

    • Michael Shaw

      Well said my friend!!

    • sigh

really now? Id say no first round qb since blackledge, 1 qb in the top 3 rounds in croyle in 20 years, and no playoff wins in 15 plus is reason enough. add in no super bowl since most weren’t even born, and ID say there is plenty reason to be pissed off
when a team takes a future STAR at 34th overall, you sit there with your alex smith jersey, hoping he someday hits 20 td’s, will have a lot of chances wit his fresh new 5 year deal

      • Danny W

        This is what I’m saying^^^^

    • Adam Sherman

you. are. a. joke. Join the Cheerleaders, or become KC Wolf.
Part of being a fan is being critical of your team when they SUCK ASS

      • KCMikeG

Are they hiring for KC Wolf?? I’m in. Where do I apply? No freaking bikinis though!!

    • KCMikeG

I fear our fan base was permanently damaged last year.

  • armychiefj

Lets look at this again: The prevailing wisdom is we take Joeckel #1 and let Albert go in FA. If this trade stays together for the next 2 weeks and goes through then we traded our 2nd pick for Alex the game manager to replace another QB we traded a 2nd round pick for: Matt the game manager. So we are going to use 2 top picks in this draft to at best be marginally better than next year and possibly worse. Awesome.

    • Michael Shaw

Wrong. Sorry, but you are dead wrong. Matt is nowhere near as good as a signal caller as Alex. Alex can go through reads faster than Matt. He can make decisions on where to go with the ball faster than Matt and he can actually throw the ball down the field if he needs to with a LOT more accuracy than Matt could. So, again, can you please stop comparing them??!! They are the equivalent of comparing apples to oranges.

      • armychiefj

Throw down the field accurately? are you smoking crack? The biggest knock on Smith is that he cant throw down the field at all. Same player: the defense for both is that when they sucked it was because of having a million different OCs thrown at them. One good year under a dumbed down offense built to prevent their mistakes. Their stats are the same. The point is that if Reid is so good as a QB coach that he can continue what Harbaugh started with Smith, then he is good enough to make Cassel that player, so why give away two prime picks?

  • Tyler Alexander

Anyone who likes this move is absolutely insane! The Chiefs just traded the #1 pick in the draft, the #2 pick in the 2nd rd, and a conditional 3rd rd pick next year for a lateral move at tackle and Alex Smith. They just paid a fortune for nothing!

    • Michael Shaw

Wrong. I think they sign Albert and go after Dee Milliner!

      • Tyler Alexander

You hope that happens but I haven’t seen anything to support that.

  • Michael Shaw

Ok, so I have been one of the few on here saying that a trade for Alex Smith was a good thing, but I have to admit that giving up our #2 THIS year will be a mistake. I could understand next year, but we needed #2 this year to pick our eventual successor to Alex. I am guessing we paid a 2nd because Arizona was either offering more picks or…………….no that’s it. I cannot think of any other reason to offer them our #2 pick this year. I think Alex will do great for Andy or he wouldn’t have been trying to get him the last two years!! I would like to “unofficially” welcome Alex Smith to my beloved Kansas City Chiefs! We wish your stay here is a long and prosperous one!! I just hope they re-sign Albert to block your blind side and get Dee Milliner to shut down Peyton, Phillip and whomever the Raiders throw under center this year!!!

    • Danny W

I agree we got him and I hope he does well, just wish they would have given a third, a second at the top is a damn fleecing.

      • Michael Shaw

        True. I agree.

  • Joe Myers

Wow wowowowowowowow . I’m done not a sports fan booooooooo chiefs boooook chiefs hahahahaha we went out and made the same dame mistake . Alex smith will never be a chief . I hate Alex smith this is go into blow up in their faces . And for all you that think Alex smith is ok to bring in as a patch work QB just remember where you stood . Clark hunt sit really stupid rushedout and got Alex smith Geno smith has way more talent we will not I repeat WILL NOT WIN A SB EVER!!!! THEY ALL NEED TO BE FIRED . 2nd round pick and an additional pick hahahahahahahahaha and I route for this team . THEY HAVE WASTED OUR TIME,MONEY,LOYALTY,DEDICATION AND NOW IM EXPECTED TO BE OK WITH ANOTHER OVER PAID AVERAGE QB THAT LOOKS GOOD , WITH A STAR STUDDED TEAM AROUND HIM . WOW JUST WOW I AM OUT !!!! I HATE THE CHIEFS MORE THEN I HATE THE RAIDERS NOW FUCK THIS TEAM AND THEIR OWNER HAHAHAHA WONT EVER TAKE A CHANCE . ALEX SMITH I HATE YOU ALEX SMITH !!! DAME BUM !! . BOOOO CHIEFS 4-12 HANG YOUR HAT ON ALEX SMITH WOWOWOWOWOWOW

  • http://www.facebook.com/fillupsherman Phil Sherman

Ya know, if I thought Alex Smith was going to spend 2013 as our only option, I’d be pissed, too. But, do we really think that andy reid and dorsey aren’t going to pick geno because of this move? We’re gonna cut cassel and ricky stanzi has proven on the field that he’s no good. That leaves us with Alex Smith, Alex Tanney and a #1 over all pick. We’ll need a QB to be backup.

1- Alex Smith(Somewhat proven veteran, got his team much further than Cassel did, could be franchise QB if he keeps up he’s done the last two years),

2- Geno Smith(Rookie with tremendous upside, could be a franchise QB)

3- Alex Tanney(injured his hand on his second play, amazing accuracy and arm strength that could put him in elite status, holds numerous all time college records, connected for a deep down field pass on his second play before injuring his hand and going on IR the rest of the season, I bet andy reid throws him in the competition)

From Reid and Dorsey’s standpoint, they probably see our current situation as an opportunity. They probably believe that if they put those three QB’s in a competition, they’ll come out with a winner at the end of it. Those are three quarter backs that each have the potential to be a long term solution for us. Hell, all three of them share names together. Geno Smith, Alex Smith, Alex Tanney. It’s meant to be.

Besides, as far as I remember, Alex Smith only has a year left on his contract. That said, couldn’t we assume that the one year contract means that Reid and Dorsey are still scheming at quarterback? Don’t worry too quickly, folks. The only sure fire dead give away of who will be our draft pick is what happens with Albert. This Alex Smith trade could be the beginning of one of the best QB competitions in a long time.

    • KCMikeG

AS has two years left and we will pay him $8.5M + the $3M for cutting Cassel so we will have do a new contract with AS.

  • slayden8

Here is what KC needs to do:
    Resign/tag Bowe and Albert
Trade first pick for revis and 9th pick
Use 9th pick on Chance Warmack

  • Danny W

I think I intuitively new this was coming, can’t say I’m surprised. It’s a move Pioli would have pulled that’s for sure. Almost like it’s meet the new boss same as the old boss. Hopefully not still have the draft and more to do in free agency like sign Bowe and Colquitt.

  • Brandon Mecham

I find myself absolutely hating every person who posts that they like this trade. I need to find a way to convince myself its only football and doesnt matter.

    • Adam Sherman

lol i’ll watch games with you.

    • KCMikeG

Hate the opinion if you must but don’t hate on a fellow fan as a person.

  • oldchiefsfan

Ok here is the deal. I personally would not be nearly as upset if we had given a 3rd round pick (preferably our second 3rd round pick) for Alex Smith but the 1st pick in the 2nd round? Seriously? If he is that all fired up great maybe we say “Ok if he takes us to the playoffs this year we’ll add a 5th round pick next year just to sweeten the pot.” Oh and if he takes us to the super Bowl and we win we’ll give you a 4th rounder next year instead of a 5th.

Alex Smith stopped playing last year because he got a concussion and San Francisco gave up on him. So he’s sitting on their roster and they owe him millions in Salary this year. Correct? Nobody showed any interest in him last year when it wouldn’t have cost a draft pick. Correct? So why would we not say “ok we’ll give you our 3rd round pick. Take it or leave it.” If that isn’t good enough then we are going to draft a QB who has just as much, if not more, upside.
Alex Smith is not worth the 1st pick in the 2nd round. It is the general consensus that he is a “Game Manager.” I am tired of “Game Managers.” I want a QB who can take this team on their shoulders and win the game. Alex Smith is not that guy. If he was that guy San Francisco would be playing him and not shopping him around looking for some desperate sucker team who says they have no other option when they are sitting on the 1st pick in the draft and the 1st pick in the 2nd round.

  • jesse

Most of you “fans” crack me up. Not really, its annoying and frustrating. Alex Smith is a proven winner. The only reason HE wasnt in the superbowl was because of a concussion. For 2 years in a row he has been very very good. And look at the 49ers receivers. Crabtree and Vernon Davis is about all he had. If we keep Bowe, we have Bowe, Baldwin, Moeaki, AND Mccluster with a quarterback that can.get them ALL the ball. Not just look to Bowe. That was part of the problem last year. Plus we have Andy Reid a proven head coach. We have a solid offensive line and i.hope Albert stays. They went and got the best coach avaiable, the best gm avaiable, and now the best qb avaiable. give them a shot before you scream Matt Cassel. He was a backup his whooooole career before kc, Alex Smith is a starter. we dont NEEd a peyton manning to win. Our defense is pretty good, amd could get even better via free agency and the rest of the draft. dammit dont give up hope. im pumped for next year!

    • jesse

plus we have Jamaal Charles. We just need someone to.get them.the.ball. And alex smith has shown.he is mature enough to lead ie handling his benching for kapernick

      • Adam Sherman

don’t comment on your own post when nobody else does. You sound like a cheerleader not a fan. A concussion is a 1-2 week injury sir. LOL the Superbowl was 8 weeks LATER?! He never retained his job because after 7 years in the NFL he was not better than a 2nd year “rookie” with zero game experience.

    • sidibeke

Matt Cassel was good for 2 years. He was a Pro Bowl QB.

  • Danny W

On a positive note I am quite certain we will hear about Matt Cassel being cut soon!

  • Spencer

As famously said in Tropic Thunder, ” You went full retard, NEVER go full retard”….well the Chiefs just went full retard

    • Killerdoctor27

      Hahaha

  • MattBG

This is a very disappointing day. From a purely emotional standpoint, as a Chiefs fan who has been waiting seemingly forever for Kansas CIty to develop their own quarterback, this does nothing for me. Nothing against Alex Smith, but I would have been happier and more excited about the team if they had drafted Geno, EJ, Glennon, Barkley, or Wilson. Some, maybe most, of those guys won’t pan out, but they would have been Chiefs from day one and I could have bought into that.

From a football standpoint, this move does not get the Chiefs closer to a Super Bowl, if anything it gets them further away. Alex Smith is an improvement, but what is the point of going 7-9 or 8-8? Smith will just keep Kansas City stuck in that no man’s land between contender and pretender.

I understand that Andy Reid has seen certain levels of success with a variety of quarterbacks and he should be commended. That said, the only time a Reid coached Philly team made the Super Bowl, he was starting a quarterback he drafted in the first round.

  • Push it up

For those of you that favored Gino Smith as the #1 pick—do you not watch college football? He was awful against KSU and then the rest of the year. Alex Smith is the best free agent option this year. Its the most prudent decision for Reid and Dorsey this year. Is he the best QB in the league-of course not, but lets face it, it’s not a good year to desperately need a QB. At least they are making plays and taking some risks.

    • KCMikeG

If 71% completion rate, 4205 yards, 8.12 YPA, 42 TD’s to 6 Int’s with a 163.9 QB rating is awful then bring on the awful please.

      • berttheclock

Yes, indeed, it is simply amazing what one can do against KU, Marshall, James Madison and Baylor, is it not? But, Syracuse in a meaningful Bowl game?

        • KCMikeG

I would also take 200 yards and 2 TD’s No Int’s with NO run game (seriously 79 yards vs Syracuse total ball control 379 yards rushing) over what we have had around here for years.
True but don’t forget that for some reason everyone seems oblivious about last year that RGIII played his entire career against some of those same, worst defenses in college football. Funny how it doesn’t seem to matter with RGIII yet with Geno it is the ultimate reason in discounting his outperforming RGIII’s stats.

          • Brody Hall

I’ve been saying this the ENTIRE TIME! When we turn out to be right I say we submit our applications because this decesion could be the end already! Yes for the sake of the chiefs I hope were wrong but I don’t feel so sure right now. We shall see how the ball rolls out

  • John Woodley

If we gave up our 2nd round from this year i will be selling my draft seats ! Flippin Unbielable!!!

  • Heilios

I would love to see Alex Tanney come into a genuine qb competition. I truly believe he has what it takes to be an elite qb in the NFL! Wouldn’t that be an awesome scenario? A major competition at the qb position between A Smith, G Smith, and A Tanney! I can dream can’t I?

    • berttheclock

Yes, and Trigger was a wonder horse, who could tap out responses. Among AS, GS and “Vic” Tanney, Tanney is the one trick pony.

  • gjrchief

I am confused with all the negativity. Banners flew over arrowhead… fans demanded change. They wanted a new GM, and new Coach, and a new QB. Hunt said he would get the best of all three he could, no matter what. He got the best HC candidate in Reid, he got the best GM candidate in Dorsey, and then the two men he selected went and met with all the best QBs coming out of college. They then said no matter what it takes we are bringing in the best QB possible, and it is not any of these losers we just met. So they paid whatever they had to to get the guy they feel gives the Chiefs the best chance to win…. I am so confused as to why anyone would fault them for this. It is aggressive, and determined. I give them kudos for showing their balls and getting the job done.

    • sidibeke

This doesn’t feel like change: new GM, another backup QB and what is shaping up to be a disappointing draft (#1 we pick the LT we already have? #2 we get…nothing).

It feels same old conservative sh!t; go with proven backup instead of taking a chance on a rookie QB. Tired.

    • micah stephenson

We wanted a new GM but not the same ol bulls**t!!!

      • gjrchief

We took the man that our QB guru believes is the best. Not the qb that the brainiacs who got Jamarcus, pryor, and palmer to be “franchise QBs” want. And not the QB who the man who cried in every post all season long last year that it was not Matt Cassels faullt wanted…. get over it. You supported cassel all year and got burned, that doesn’t mean A Smith will make you look like a fool as well. Your like the girl who got cheated on and swears she will never love anyone again. Let’s get over the past, and start cheering on our chiefs again.

        • Derek

we will all get behind you the minute something noteworthy comes along worth cheering…as far as i have seen we’re no different position than we were a year ago….every day the news gets worse and worse about the draft. I hope to God someone drafts Geno and kicks our asses with him. Then all you nay-sayers can believe in our infallible leaders. Face it. The NFL has been raping this squad and more so the fans for at least a decade if not more. There is ZERO hope left in the KC fan-base. Talk to the majority and they’re disgruntled at the very least. I, like a few, are out-right pissed-off with what has happend. Draft Geno or get the fuck-out of KC. End of my rant…you know…until some more bullshit tackle talk is spoken in the next 24 hours.

  • John Woodley

Can’t believe I’ve wasted 25 years on this team!

    • Derek

same. Frustrating. I will still read the posts but never again bet on them or even support them. I would however like to see Matt Scott in the third round for kc. Certainly no geno but could be exciting….for once….either way I wish geno the best and I hope he wins a play-off game in the first season while we watch from our sidelines of mediocrity. Peace kc and goodluck to you. My family has suffered a combined 50 years of shameful embarrassment and I’m going on 11 years myself. Can’t handle another decade of stupidity. I wish you well but you won’t even win a play-off game in my life-time

  • sidibeke

I’m an optimist (I have to be, right? I’m a Chiefs fan), so I’ll hope for the best. I’m not excited, though. I’ll tell you what will really piss me off, though: if we draft Joeckel with the #1 pick. It will feel like we used our 1st and 2nd round draft picks for a back up QB. Dorsey had better find a way to trade back and get an extra pick in the process so we can take that QB to cultivate with one of those picks.

  • Outback Chief

if he’s better than Cassel it’ll be worth the pick but they need to draft another QB as well or the fans with spend there money at the liquor store instead of season tickets

    • Outback Chief

but for me it’s too expensive

  • Ron White

Hello Adam, I wanted to thank you for the feedback you gave me yesterday. It made me do some self anylisis and I have come to some conclusions. Let’s see you said I sounded Stupid and Arrogant. Now I was raised to refrain from leveling the term Stupid on anyone so let’s change that term to Level of Intelligence. Now when I compare the post you make to the way I write I would have to go way back to the 2nd or 3rd grade to match your Level of Intelligence in your post. Here is an example:
Colin Kaepernick is already a Superstar and Cam Newton is a Game Manager??! LOL you’re an idiot man.
    Or this one:
you. are. a. joke. Join the Cheerleaders, or become KC Wolf. Part of being a fan is being critical of your team when they SUCK ASS.
There is just no competing with that so you win. Try as I might I just don’t think I will ever reach your level.
    Now let’s talk about the Arrogance. I have to admit that I do try to add a level of Arrogance into my post in order to offset the Arrogance of the poster i am debating with. I just don’t think there is any chance of me reaching the standard you have set with your level of Arrogance. Let me use this as an example;

If we choose not to take a QB #1 overall as a result of this I will be disgusted. The guy lost his job in the middle of the damn season, on a super bowl contender, to a 2nd year guy with zero game experience! It took 7 years and Jim Harbaugh’s badass-ness to get ANYTHING good out of him. Chiefs land a better smarter classier franchise’s backup quarterback, sounds familiar….. for the love of god Christ almighty we are going to do this allllll over again huh

Now I may not have as much time on my hands to compete with statements like that and I certainly do not have the experience. I mean John Dorsey and Andy Reid have over 40 years of experience in front office jobs, hours and hours of reviewing Coach’s Tape, Interviews, Combines, Bowl Games, NFL Games, in addition to the rather large staff of Scouts and other personnel they have at their disposal. I just can’t compete with those types of resources let alone the experience. All i have to offer is 50 years of going to games, watching them on TV, and a little YouTube as my resource. Of course I do have the internet. But based on your statement referenced above you obviously have much better skills and information at your disposal than the Chiefs leadership team does. So based on that you win again as there is no way I could possibly ever see myself reach what i would call the Pinnacle of Arrogance to think I would know better then them how to build a winning franchise in the NFL. But hey, I can live with not being on equal plains with you. And that does not even take into account calling someone Stupid, A Joke, An A-Hole, or telling those that disagree with my opinion to Get Screwed. You get a Five Diamond Rating for those. But to each his own. I wish you well and Go Chiefs!

  • Don417

All you crybabies are an embarrassment to Chiefs fans. Fans of other teams that may visit this website are probably laughing their a** off at how stupid you sound.

  • ZachAttack

He is a winning QB and a good fit fir our offense… We are definately run first and that’s where he came from and is used too … Look what he did for the 49er’s? I think he will be an okay fit for the team at least for right now …. There Are absolutely no Qb’s in the draft and why not get one that has winning experience instead of shooting in the dark on an okay QB from college
