Offensive Tackles Draft Crushes

Broderick Jones – Georgia – 6’5″ – 311 lbs – 33 3/4″ arms

On Thursday night, if the Chiefs move up in the first round to the early 20s to draft someone, I hope it’s Broderick Jones of Georgia. Jones is a mauler who also has the movement skills to excel at tackle in the NFL. He’s not as polished as some of the other top prospects, but I think his ceiling is as high as anyone and with KC’s good coaching on the offensive line I would feel great about Jones succeeding. You just can’t help but love his play style as he acts like a bouncer, throwing defenders out of the club. Adding him to the offensive line group that KC already has would give them the best line in the league.

Dawand Jones – Ohio State – 6’8″ – 374 lbs – 36 3/8″ arms

I know I’m alone on an island here. Most Chiefs fans want nothing to do with a massive offensive tackle whose question is if he can move well enough after the Orlando Brown experiment. However, Dawand Jones is bigger, stronger, and moves better than Orland Brown. Plus he’d be playing on the right side (which is where Brown really belongs). When I watch his tape I see a human mountain that gets out of his stance fast enough that defenders can’t get around his massive wingspan and you simply can’t go through him. There are definitely some foot speed issues when defenders make him change direction, but I still think he’ll be a plus starter at right tackle from day one.

Nick Saldiveri – Old Dominion – 6’6″ – 318 lbs – 33 1/4″ arms

If the Chiefs don’t land a tackle in the first round then my clear top choice for them after that is Nick Saldiveri. Despite coming from a smaller program, I think Saldiveri shows the strength and movement skills needed to start at tackle in the NFL. However, even if he doesn’t thrive there, I think he could also make a good guard. So if he doesn’t beat out Lucas Niang at right tackle he could also be the eventual replacement plan for Joe Thuney at left guard.

Now it’s time to move to the defensive side of the ball.
