The Dorance Armstrong deal

Chiefs trade: 5th-round pick
Cowboys trade: DE Dorance Armstrong

The Dallas Cowboys are working on bringing back Dante Fowler on defense at the present time, and it might be a done deal by the time you read this. If so (and even if not), the Cowboys are already loaded at pass rusher and things look quite crowded going forward into 2023 at the position. Yeah, sounds like a nice luxury, right?

Well, if someone is going to wiggle free, it might just be a player who would be familiar to local fans from his time at the University of Kansas in Dorance Armstrong.

Armstrong was a fourth-round pick of the Cowboys in the 2018 NFL Draft and took considerable time to develop as a pass rusher. He started three total games in his first three seasons with 2.5 sacks to show for it but he showed some nice potential in his fourth year which earned him a two-year extension just a year ago—a modest two-year, $12 million contract to bolster the team’s depth.

Last year, Armstrong responded with a career year as a situational pass rusher. He put up a career-high 8.5 sacks in 17 games for Dallas but played only 47 percent of all snaps. Pro Football Focus credited him with 40 pressures on the year, including 22 hurries, after putting up 35 a season ago.

While Armstrong is not a well-rounded end since he doesn’t hold up as well against the run, he could still work well with Mike Danna to provide another solid pass rusher to spell starters like George Karlaftis and whoever else the Chiefs bring in. Or maybe he could grow into that role that’s been too crowded in Dallas. Either way, Armstrong looks like a man squeezed out of a crowded situation and K.C. might do well to position themselves to take advantage of the abundance of supply.
