7 Chiefs players who’ve (likely) played their final game in Kansas City
By Matt Conner
Blake Bell
The Chiefs have rolled four deep at tight end for the last couple of years, and that’s provided a nice home for Blake Bell along the way. But if we’re reading the tea leaves of the postseason correctly, we’re pretty sure Bell’s tenure with the Chiefs is likely finished.
We should say this up front: Bell might even earn a new one-year deal with the Chiefs this spring in order to keep him around on the offseason roster. In fact, that’d be a fairly smart move, at least until the Chiefs can see how the roster looks after the draft. After all, Bell is an instant fit as a great blocker and a smart player who limits mistakes and knows the offense.
However, Bell is getting older and only played 3 games for the Chiefs last season, largely due to injury. Jody Fortson and Noah Gray are competent blockers at this point and Travis Kelce is still around. From a roster construction standpoint, it should be noted that Gray and Fortson are now with two years or less of cost control as well, so grabbing a tight end in this year’s draft class makes a lot of sense. Such a move would leave Bell on the outside looking in.
Knowing Bell was already a healthy scratch in the postseason leads us to believe he’s done in K.C. Much as we love him, that’s just the way things work.
