Resolution: Re-sign Juju Smith-Schuster, Jerick McKinnon, and Carlos Dunlap to team-friendly deals.

While the draft and Orlando Brown Jr.’s contract situation will get most of the headlines for Brett Veach, one of his biggest goals for the New Year should be to try to bring back three veteran free agents who have played great for Kansas City this year on really cheap contracts. Juju Smith-Schuster, Jerick McKinnon, and Carlos Dunlap have a combined cap number this season of a little over 7 million dollars. That’s an insane value and return on investment for the Chiefs.

Will Brett Veach be able to bring all three back next season for a combined 7 million dollars? No, I don’t see that as possible, but I really would like to see Veach find a way to bring all three back without overspending. Juju seems to be happy in Kansas City and two years ago he took a discount to go back to the Pittsburgh Steelers where he was comfortable. So maybe he’ll take a little bit of a team-friendly deal to stay in KC with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes.

Jerick McKinnon has turned into one of KC’s best offensive weapons this season. He’s now scored nine total touchdowns this season, eight of them through the air. However, running backs just don’t break the bank in free agency anymore and McKinnon will turn 31 this offseason. He might be able to get a little more elsewhere, but nobody is paying a 31-year-old journeyman with an injury history a big deal so he might as well stay in KC where he has a good thing going.

Finally, Carlos Dunlap has been a fantastic addition to the pass rush rotation this year. He is thriving in Steve Spagnuolo’s system. Dunlap will turn 34 this offseason and has had a long career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks before coming to KC. Hopefully, Veach can convince Dunlap to make another Super Bowl run at a reasonable price here in KC where he looks to be enjoying himself.

If Brett Veach can bring all three of those Chiefs back without spending huge in free agency it will be a massive win for him and the team.

Now let’s talk about Steve Spagnuolo.
