Extend Tyrann Mathieu

The argument against goes something like this: Tyrann Mathieu is getting older and he didn’t look as solid this season. He’s had run-ins with fans on Twitter and the drama isn’t worth it. If someone wants to adhere to that line of reasoning, it’s their business, but this decision is an easy one in my book.

Mathieu might be 30 and he might be emotional, but he’s still playing at a Pro Bowl level and that passionate demeanor is part and parcel of what makes him such a compelling figure and valuable defender for the Chiefs. He’s a productive player whose versatility, intelligence, and instincts allow the defense to provide multiple looks or maintain persons at other key positions—serving as a luxury chess piece for Steve Spagnuolo.

Mathieu is also the unquestioned leader on the field for the Chiefs, the very heart and soul for a defensive unit that looks to him to help guys recognize what’s coming, to get into the right position, to set the tone for the work ahead.

The money might get rough on this one, and if Mathieu wants to break the bank going forward, then that might change how “easy” this decision is, but both sides are saying the right thing and they have been all along. I’d trust this to be an easy call.
