Trey Smith

If Creed Humphrey is the the North Star for this group, then Smith is definitely shining brightly in that same constellation of rookies. It’s even more ridiculous that the Chiefs found their long-term answer at right guard in the sixth round.

It’s fitting that Smith is replacing Laurent Duvernay-Tardif at the position given that he was also a sixth-round steal who ended up starting at right guard for multiple seasons in K.C. The good news for Chiefs fans is that Smith’s ceiling as a mauler is higher than LDT’s and gives them a potential Pro Bowl performer next to Humphrey and opposite another in veteran Joe Thuney.

Through six games, Humphrey has had the cleaner transition to the pros than Trey Smith, who at times has gotten pushed back by savvier linemen with strength and technique, but no one should complain at this point about the excellent results the Chiefs have gotten inside. It’s almost unfair for any single player among the new trio along the interior because it keeps any one of them from receiving their due, but Thuney, Humphrey and Smith are all studs—both in the present and the future.
