The Kansas City Chiefs are a complete disaster right now

I also think that Andy Reid deserves a little criticism for how the offense is playing. He doesn’t seem to be calling plays in a way that acknowledges what is currently going on with this team. I’m not saying he should panic, but when the defense is struggling you have to be aggressive on offense to try and counter that. You can’t suddenly run Darrel Williams up the middle on a key third-down instead of putting the ball in Mahomes’ hands. You can’t wait until the game is out of reach to be aggressive on 4th down. It’s too little too late at that point. If the defense is going to take away your deep chunk plays then you should have a short passing game ready that gets the ball out fast and allows Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and the running backs out of the backfield to feast in the short game. A defense can’t take everything away!

Speaking of coaching, that seems like a good segue to the defense. I’ve been a defender of Steve Spagnuolo for a while. “He’s not the one missing tackles” or “It’s not the scheme’s fault that players aren’t doing their job” I would say. Here’s the deal. If for five straight weeks guys are out of position, don’t know where to be, and you’re having miscommunication issues left and right, YOU AREN’T TEACHING YOUR SCHEME WELL ENOUGH. It is the defensive coaching staff’s job from Monday through Saturday to come up with a plan to stop the opposing team and relay and teach that plan to the defense. Clearly, that is not happening. So either the Chiefs filled their defense with a bunch of morons that aren’t capable of learning a scheme or you are not doing enough during the other six days of the week to make sure they know what to do on Sunday. Period.

I don’t think that firing Spagnuolo now really does anything. They aren’t going to overhaul the scheme or how they do things mid-season and having one less guy around to teach and game plan isn’t going to help make things better, but if I’m Andy Reid I am having a very frank conversation with Spagnuolo this week where I tell him that either this defense gets WAY better or there will be a complete overhaul of the staff and players on the defensive side of the ball next season.

I also want to point out that continuing to play players that aren’t getting the job done is a coaching failure too. Dan Sorensen is an absolute liability out there. It’s clear to every person watching the Chiefs defense. I don’t care how much you trust guys like Juan Thornhill, Armani Watts, or even Devon Key or Zayne Anderson on the practice squad. If Dan Sorensen is getting the worst possible outcome on the field you owe it to the team to try someone else. Period. It literally can’t be worse it can only be equally awful and this way you are at least trying something. Heck at least with a young guy you can hope it helps them learn and develop.

I’m not taking the defensive players out of the blame here. They’ve been bad from the front four to the linebackers to the secondary. They can’t tackle. They can’t cover. They can’t get pressure on the quarterback without blitzing. It’s pathetic. Some of the same players that have played well enough to get KC to two Super Bowls aren’t playing at that same level now. It’s not good enough from the defensive players either.
