K’Lavon Chaisson – Edge – LSU

Mock Draft – NFL.com – Bucky Brooks – 3/10/2020

Other Players Available: Cesar Ruiz (IOL, Michigan), Jeff Gladney (CB, TCU)

K’Lavon Chaisson is one of the better ranked edge rushers in this draft class. He’s listed at 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds. While that size may make you think the Chiefs could play him as an outside linebacker, his tape definitely looks like a guy that should be a pure edge player at the next level.

Early in his career, I would expect him to be a successful pass rusher but may be a little bit of a liability against the run. He’ll never be a big run-stuffing defensive end, but with some NFL-caliber strength training and coaching, he does look like he could become a good three down player in the NFL.

A lot of mock drafts have him going much earlier in the first round than this, so it definitely wouldn’t be a reach for the Chiefs to take him here.

My Take On This Pick:

This just doesn’t make sense to me. First, I don’t expect Chaisson to make it to pick 32, so I don’t think this will even be an option. Second, while the value would be good, the Chiefs just paid Frank Clark a truck load of money to be their primary edge rusher for the foreseeable future. Then with Tanoh Kpassagnon and Alex Okafor still on the roster it just seems like overkill to use your first round pick on an edge player with serious needs at cornerback and linebacker.

While the top linebackers were all off the table at this point, there were corners available and frankly, if Chaisson was available, they could probably find a trade partner that wanted to move up a few spots to get him.

Next up, one more defensive lineman option.
