Ross Blacklock – DT – TCU

Mock Draft – NFL.com – Daniel Jeremiah – 3/2/2020

Other Players Available: Zack Baun (LB, Wisconsin), Cesar Ruiz (IOL, Michigan), Jeff Gladney (CB, TCU)

Ross Blacklock is a high-upside defensive tackle prospect that might be a good long term replacement for Chris Jones if the Chiefs aren’t able to come to a long term deal with him.

Blacklock is listed at 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds. His play style (much like Jones) is that of an athletic play disrupter as opposed to a physical gap plugger. Blacklock is good at hitting gaps with a fast first step and getting penetration upfield. He also has shown good side-to-side agility.

Where he struggles is at holding his point of attack when facing strong interior offensive linemen. I think most people see Blacklock as a second round pick, but it certainly isn’t crazy to think he could slip into the late first round.

My Take On This Pick:

I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of this pick. Let’s say the Chiefs do end up trading Chris Jones for an additional first round pick and then use that pick on another position of need. At that point, I’d be okay with using this pick on Blacklock. Even then, I’d feel better trading back a few spots and drafting him there.

I’d rather have any of the three players listed above as still available in this spot over Blacklock. I’ll be honest though, my opinion of this pick is probably affected by my desire for the Chiefs to lock up Jones long term, which would make this a really unnecessary pick. If you are a big fan of the idea of trading Jones at this point, then this pick makes a lot more sense.

Next up, a mock that has the Chiefs adding an edge rusher in the first round.
