After Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went down with a knee injury, NFL players took to social media to respond with support.

The collective gasp could be heard all around the NFL. During the second quarter of the opening game of Week 7 in the National Football League, the reigning Most Valuable Player was unable to get up on his own after successfully converting a fourth down quarterback sneak. Instead, Patrick Mahomes lay there helpless at the bottom of a pile, waiting for someone to attend to his knee.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos squared off at Mile High on Thursday in a key AFC West rivalry battle, but the primary storyline has nothing to do with the actual game score or results so far. Instead the headlines on Friday will all be about Mahomes and his injury timeline as the league wonders how long the best young quarterback will be forced to sit on the sidelines.

The loss of Mahomes is devastating all around for the NFL. For the Chiefs it’s the loss of the heart of their Super Bowl team, the captain of a potentially historic offense that has yet to click due to injuries. The team was already waiting for Eric Fisher, Andrew Wylie, Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Damien Williams at various points of this short season so far and now Mahomes will obviously miss time as well, maybe even a significant amount.

As for the NFL, the league loses one of its marquee players in the process, a player who has taken over the sport after just one year as a starter because of how special he truly is.

In response to the news, several Chiefs and other NFL players and figures took to social media to express their support for Mahomes and their sadness at seeing him go down with a knee injury.
