If Veach and the Chiefs decide not to go out and acquire a big name through a trade but still want to try and upgrade the roster enough to make a real Super Bowl run in 2019, they may end up trying to do it through multiple smaller free agent signings.

The Chiefs current cap space would make it possible to sign numerous free agents to smaller deals like those they gave guys like Breeland, Wilson, and even Okafor. If most of these additions were one-year deals, it would allow them to add talent to the current roster with zero effect on their long term salary cap picture.

While most of the big names have signed at this point there are numerous players still available that could potentially help the Chiefs this season. The biggest name out there is probably defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, but there are also guys like linebacker Zach Brown, defensive end Ziggy Ansah, cornerback Morris Claiborne, linebacker Jamie Collins, pass rusher Shane Ray, and safety Tre Boston that could likely be added without spending an arm and a leg. Each would definitely upgrade the defense.

The Chiefs may also choose to wait and see what they land in the upcoming NFL draft before they sign any more free agents. Perhaps the best part of the Chiefs situation is that they have enough options now. They don’t have to pursue any specific one of them. They could also decide to pick and choose a combination of all three. They could likely trade for one of the bigger name players I listed and extend Chris Jones and sign a smaller name free agent or two. For the first time in several years the Chiefs have created a cap situation where they have multiple options that they can pursue.

If we’ve learned anything about Brett Veach thus far it’s that he isn’t afraid to make big moves. While none of us have any idea which of these paths he will take in the coming month I think its safe to assume he isn’t done with this roster yet. I for one am anxious to see what comes next.
