Memphis Express VS Birmingham Iron

Luis Perez, the quarterback for the Birmingham Iron, started the game with a short pass to tight end Braedon Bowman. Bowman proceeded to leap over defenders on his way to a first down to the excitement of the fans. Birmingham took that momentum from the first play of the game and never gave it back.

From there, the Iron’s defense continued to come up with big play after big play on their way to hosting the first shutout in AAF history. The Memphis Express were led by former second-round pick Christan Hackenberg. Hackenberg was unable to ever get into a rhythm as he completed 10 passes on 23 attempts for 87 yards and one interception.

Trent Richardson looked like his old self in his return to Alabama. He rushed for 58 yards and two touchdowns and looked like the workhorse back that Clevland had hoped he would be when they drafted him third overall back in 2012. The Birmingham defense was led by DeMarquis Gates who finished the night with ten solo tackles.

Meanwhile, former Chiefs linebacker Johnathan Massaquoi finished the night with two sacks and five tackles for the Iron. To say that the Iron dominated this game is an understatement. Holding an opponent to a shut out is a difficult task no matter the level of competition. It will be fun to watch and see if they can repeat their performance against the Salt Lake Stallions next week.
