Whitney Mercilus, EDGE/OLB, Houston Texans

This one is a little crazy and if they were able to pull it off, I would be amazed, but it’s worth a try. Mercilus is a very talented pass rusher and tackler for the Texans. Houston drafted Duke Ejiofor to eventually take over either Jadeveon Clowney‘s or Mercilus’s spot on the roster. To me, it seems more likely to be Mercilus. This would be interesting because he would fill in for the injured Justin Houston. When he returned, it would be interesting to see how K.C. would use him. Honestly, I think he could help the Chiefs in any role.

Why the Chiefs should give him a look:

The Texans will likely not be selling, but Mercilus would be an amazing get for Kansas City. Not only could he line up outside and rush the passer, but he would be serviceable inside. Mercilus is just an incredible athlete and he could help the Chiefs at any linebacker position.

What it would cost:

I think this would be a home run swing. If you are going to try to acquire Mercilus, you had better have a good offer. I think Kansas City could offer a first round pick and get him. However, I would be more comfortable offering Breeland Speaks and a 2nd round pick for his services.

Sean Lee, ILB, Dallas Cowboys

This would be a great move for Kansas City, however unlikely. Sean Lee, when healthy is the heart and soul of the Dallas Cowboy defense. But that is just it, he is not consistently healthy. In fact, he has had so many injuries, it is starting to make Rob Gronkowski look healthy. Lee would make for a great addition to the inside linebacker corp for the Chiefs.

Why the Chiefs should give him a look:

Lee is highly touted as the on-field coach in Dallas. With Eric Berry out and Derrick Johnson gone, the Chiefs could use some leadership on the field. While Lee has been in a 4-3 for his entire career, he would be very good in running situations. He can explode to the football and shows flashes of greatness. If not for injuries, he would be regarded as one of the best.

What it would cost:

If I am the GM, I am seriously considering floating the idea of a 3rd or 4th round pick for Sean Lee. It seems unlikely that Dallas would choose to part ways with him for this cost, or any cost for that matter, but it is definitely worth a look. Kansas City needs help with everything in the middle of the field. Lee provides some help.

Lorenzo Alexander, ILB, Buffalo Bills

Alexander is another linebacker that could help the Chiefs in different parts of the game. An all-purpose linebacker, Lorenzo Alexander has spent 11 seasons in the NFL. Mostly known for his ability to stop the run, he is serviceable in the passing game as well. I think the Chiefs would be wise to consider his name at the deadline.

Why the Chiefs should give him a look:

Similarly to Sean Lee, Alexander is a good field general. Although nowhere near the ability of Lee, Alexander has been a decent coverage linebacker during his career. Alexander would provide great depth for K.C.

What it would cost:

Alexander would likely not have an enormous price tag. If the Chiefs and Bills were looking at a serious trade offer, the offering point would likely be a 5th or 6th round pick. I think that if they can get any kind of immediate help from giving up late round picks, you jump on the opportunity.
