Kansas City Chiefs: Early position impressions from training camp
The Cornerbacks
* Kendall Fuller is flat out amazing at sticking to guys in the open field. It’s understandable why he’s so good in the slot. Guys just have trouble shaking him.
* David Amerson looked really good the days I was there. Based on what I saw on the two days I was there I thought he looked better than Steven Nelson (who I think is a good player). If the Chiefs were to land Beshaud Breeland (not holding my breath) I wouldn’t be shocked if Breeland and Amerson started on the outside with Fuller in the slot and Nelson as the first guy off the bench.
* There was a lot of buzz around Will Redmond and Keith Reaser early in the offseason as guys that could make the team and possibly contribute this year. I think that buzz may be wearing down as they seem to have been passed up by rookies Tremon Smith and Arrion Springs. Reaser, Smith, and Springs were the second string corners with Redmond only getting on the field with the third string (and not standing out there). Reaser was okay when I was there but Smith and Springs flashed more often and now reports are that Reaser left practice on Sunday with a quad injury.
* Tremon Smith is a as fast as advertised and if his technique and instincts can be developed you could be looking at a future starting cornerback. Put Smith at the top of your watch list for the preseason.
* Springs isn’t quite as flashy as Smith but is what I would call a “pesky” corner. The guy just seems to constantly be on his man. He did bite on a few fakes but for an undrafted rookie he looks like a keeper. His upside may not be as high as Smith’s from a natural skill set standpoint but he’s definitely a guy to watch.
Finally, let’s close this out with the safeties.
