Kansas City Chiefs

I hate to place them here, among the teams in the middle. I mean, it’s better than other franchises where the fit simply doesn’t make sense—either on the roster or when it comes to finances. However there are simply other teams in the mix that work out better (for reasons we’ll discuss down the road).

For the Chiefs, there’s a lot to love about the addition of Breeland. First of all, he stayed with the Chiefs at training camp long enough to watch every Peter Jackson movie ever. He also seemed to enjoy himself. The Chiefs certainly would enjoy having Breeland around as an option outside while they figure out whether or not Steven Nelson is ready for a full season and David Amerson is ready for a comeback year.

The Chiefs have potential in Arrion Springs and Tremon Smith but that’s a major leap forward. For a cornerback group without anyone under contract in 2019 among the likely starters, adding Breeland to the mix would not only solidify the current corps but it would also not get in the way of others breaking out. Even if Breeland joined Kendall Fuller as CBs in 2019 and beyond, there’s still plenty of room for the kids to learn and grow.

Unfortunately this comes down to finances and it’s here that the Chiefs will lose out. I have no question at all that if it was only about fit and fun, Breeland would be in a Chiefs uniform already. They are a contender with a great head coach and Justin Houston and Eric Berry and Chris Jones already in place as impact players. Plus Breeland has been teammates with Amerson and Fuller in years past in Washington.

But money is money and that’s king in this deal (see later). The Chiefs simply can’t afford to pay what other teams not only can but will pay for a quality starting cornerback available in late July.

Odds of signing Breeland: 15%
