The Back-Up Running Backs

The Contenders:
Spencer Ware, Charcandrick West, Damien Williams, Kerwynn Williams and Darrel Williams

This one is anybody’s guess. I’ve heard a lot about how Spencer Ware is by far the best of this group and should be the clear cut number two running back. While I agree that could be the case, if KC was 100% confident that Ware will be healthy and the player he was a couple of years ago I just don’t see them signing both Damien and Kerwynn Williams this offseason. Could Spencer Ware prove himself to be the clear number two back? Yes. Could he continue to have injury issues and get cut in favor of someone that can stay on the field? Yes.

The guy that should be the most worried is Charcandrick West. Damien Williams is known as a pass catching third down back type and if they were happy with West in that role you wouldn’t have thought they would sign Damien. Still, West has the advantage of already knowing Reid’s playbook so I wouldn’t completely count him out. Kerwynn Williams is more of a do-it-all type of player. He can be a serviceable fill in running the ball and also has experience returning both punts and kicks and that versatility could give him a leg up on the last roster spot.

The guy I’m most excited to watch is undrafted rookie Darrel Williams. He’s a true between the tackles power runner that could be a valuable asset in short yardage situations.

While Kareem Hunt is the unquestioned starter at running back there may not be a more interesting battle to watch in camp than the running back spots behind him.

Next up, who will start at left guard?
