The secondary

Even with those issues, the offense should find a way to perform this season. The other side of the ball has more questions than answers at this stage of the season. There has been a significant changing of the guard as Veach goes about making the team he has envisioned. The cornerback position has one returning starter from last season in Steven Nelson. Everyone else has been replaced, and while this shows a lot of effort on Veach’s part to try and make the position better, the new talent is not guaranteed to be any better than what the Chiefs trotted out last year.

Kendall Fuller, Nelson, David Amerson, Keith Reaser, Will Redmond, and Tremon Smith are all locks at this point to make the roster. Outside of Fuller, Amerson, and Nelson, there are huge question marks. Veach has been talking up guys like Reaser and Redmond and even doubled down on his belief in them by standing pat during the NFL draft and Supplemental draft. As a fan, it is hard not to be skeptical of what we have at the position.

Add in the fact the Chiefs got rid of Ron Parker this offseason and Eric Berry is returning from an Achilles tear and it adds even more questions in the secondary. Will Berry return to form? Who is going to play the free safety position? Will it be any better than last season? There are just no definite answers at this point. After ranking No. 29 against the pass last season, it does not feel like much was done on the back end to improve that.

The Chiefs could improve the pass defense by generating more of a pass rush this season. With the return of Dee Ford and Tanoh Kpassagnon having a full season under his belt, we could see an improvement in this area. The problem here is whether or not Bob Sutton is going to dial up blitzes the way he has in the past. These are all questions that cannot be answered until the beginning of camp at the earliest.

The hype train has been going faster than ever this season. With ESPN ranking Kansas City’s offensive arsenal as #1 in the entire league.  Along with all of the positive quotes from the coaching staff has fans impatiently waiting for the season to start. Even with all the positivity,  Chiefs fans should know by now that things do not usually go as planned once the pads come on. With camp starting back up again in a couple of weeks, let’s all pump the brakes a bit on the expectations for the team.
