2018 NFL mock draft: 7-round mock for the Kansas City Chiefs
By Matt Conner
No. 124 overall
Duke Dawson, CB, Florida
No. 196 overall
Isaac Yiadom, CB, Boston College
In this mock draft scenario, we’ve got the Chiefs taking back to back cornerbacks in the fourth and sixth rounds respective, with the picks of Duke Dawson and Isaac Yiadom.
Dawson is a first-team All-SEC player with four interceptions and 9 passes defended for Florida last year and it would be a bit of a surprise if Dawson was available at this point. If he is, it should be a fairly easy call for the Chiefs considering Dawson’s ability to make an impact on the defense and special teams. He’s very effective as a blanket in the middle, and the Chiefs would love his ability to jam the receiver.
As for Yiadom, the Boston College product is a bit more of a project than Dawson, but at this point in the draft, that’s to be expected. Yiadom is aggressive and is a perfect special teams fit with his motor and versatility. At 6’1, 190 lbs., he has the length the Chiefs would like to coach up and develop as a real option over the long-term.
Together, the Chiefs need to replace a lot of talent in the secondary after watching Marcus Peters, Darrelle Revis, Kenny Acker, Terrance Mitchell and Phillip Gaines all leave this offseason. Carlton Davis, as the second round pick in this mock, gives the Chiefs an instant starter outside to go with Kendall Fuller, but David Amerson and Steven Nelson are both free agents, which means the Chiefs could look just as thin one year from now at cornerback.
Adding Dawson and Yiadom gives them tons of potential and depth at the position both in the short and long-term.
