JACKSONVILLE, FL - AUGUST 17: Chad Henne

The Kansas City Chiefs have found their new veteran backup quarterback after signing Chad Henne to a two-year contract, per reports.

The vision heading into this offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs at quarterback was to pair first-year starter Patrick Mahomes with a veteran backup.  They’ve now found their man with the reported signing of Chad Henne to a two-year deal, per Mike Garafolo.

Henne is joining his third NFL team in a 10-year career that began with the Miami Dolphins in the 2008 NFL Draft. For the last five seasons, he’s served as the starting quarterback turned backup for the Jacksonville Jaguars, backing up Blake Bortles ever since the Jags drafted him four years ago.

Henne will clearly be the backup in Kansas City as the team handles the starting gig to Mahomes after he sat a year on the bench learning behind Alex Smith. The Chiefs also lack a third option on the depth chart, although they certainly do not have to carry one. They have, however, each season during Andy Reid’s tenure in Tyler Bray, who recently left to sign a free agent deal with the Chicago Bears.

Henne has a career record of 18-35 as a starting quarterback and hasn’t completed a single pass since the 2014 season. In his career, Henne has thrown 58 touchdowns and 63 interceptions. The Chiefs were also connected via rumors to Matt Moore as another backup options, but Henne was the one with a visit scheduled and apparently convinced general manager Brett Veach that he was the man for the job to mentor Mahomes and provide experience on the depth chart.
