Leon McQuay III, DB, USC
The second of two original picks for the Chiefs. Leon McQuay III is a nice hybrid defensive back who can slot into several spaces for the Chiefs who comes to the league as ready as any prospect. He was a leader in the Trojans’ secondary and has experience all over the field. Very intelligent who should be a quick study and enjoy some early playing time on special teams.
Other picks available that make sense for the Chiefs: If the Chiefs were interested at all in replacing Cairo Santos, Zane Gonzalez, the draft’s best kicker, was still available early in round seven.
Round 7 (No. 245 overall)
Used or traded: Traded in package of picks to move up and select Toledo RB Kareem Hunt
Jack Tocho, CB, N.C. State
Does this fit: Tocho had some nice production at N.C. State with 2 interceptions and 9 pass breakups in 2016 for the Wolfpack. Unfortunately he also has a bit of an injury history and the Chiefs at this point simply have too many corners. Dorsey would not likely take so many defensive backs and could have used this as a flyer on another position to at least add some youth and see what happens.
Other picks available that make sense for the Chiefs: Keion Adams of Western Michigan went a few picks later to the Pittsburgh Steelers and gives them another 3-4 edge rusher to develop, something the Chiefs could definitely use in this exercise. They also didn’t take a tight end, so perhaps Buffalo’s Mason Schreck could have worked here.
