Pick: 2
Team: San Francisco 49ers
Selection: Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State

With the second pick of the AA Staff Mock Draft, the 49ers select Malik Hooker from Ohio State. After the selection was made, new General Manager Lucas Hampton was asked about the selection. “I was on staff with Scott Pioli at the time that Eric Berry was selected. I moved teams a few times and each move I brought along the commitment to never pass up safety talent like that. We found ourselves in a very fortunate position with this mock draft. The recent changes to our secondary, moving Eric Reid around from safety to corner warranted looking for someone to fill that void.”

Hampton continued, “When my scouts placed reports on Hooker on my desk, I looked at the 6-1, 206 lb. beast and promised he would be my guy. Reviewing film on him, he shows killer ball tracking instincts and can close distance in the blink of an eye. He can play the single high safety very well. His whole play style has Ed Reed and Eric Berry written all over it. I could not pass up this chance. Hooker fills our need with superstar talent and a guy we hope turns into a perennial Pro Bowler.” [Lucas Hampton]
