2017 NFL Draft: 5 intriguing prospects from the Chiefs local pro day
By Matt Conner
Michael Scherer, LB, Missouri
Michael Scherer looked impressive the moment he became a starter in the heart of the Mizzou defense as a sophomore. In 2014, Scherer was second on the team with 114 total tackles, 3.5 of them for a loss, 1 forced fumble and 2 fumble recoveries. He followed suit with another strong season his junior year with 93 total tackles, 9 of them for a loss, and 3 passes defended as well.
Unfortunately, Scherer’s swan song was cut short during his seventh game when he went down with a knee injury that eventually was diagnosed as a torn ACL and MCL against Middle Tennesee State. The injury not only ended Scherer’s college career with the Tigers, but it also kept him from appearing in postseason showcases like the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, the Senior Bowl, et al. He also missed the NFL Combine and was a limited participant at Mizzou’s recent pro day.
That said, Scherer could be a very interesting undrafted free agent addition for the Chiefs heading into training camp. The Chiefs certainly need some competition in the middle given Derrick Johnson’s return from injury and the loss of Josh Mauga. The Chiefs have auditioned a couple veteran linebackers already. It could be worth if for John Dorsey to keep tabs on Scherer to see how well he’s coming along in rehab.
