Phase Three (4 weeks) – May 22

These final four weeks of a team’s offseason program is when things get more intense. Continuing through June 19, this is where mini-camps are held and where things can get a bit confusing. These four weeks are actually just a window where teams are allowed up to 10 days of OTA (organized team practice activities). Most teams stagger these days over the course of three weekends, as illustrated by the Chiefs’ schedule this spring over three consecutive weekends (May 23-25, May 30-June 1, June 6-9).

Every team is also allowed to force all players to show up or penalize them for missing it with a mandatory minicamp. For the Chiefs, this comes on the final weekend in that four-week window: June 13-15. It’s here in this window of time we’ll find out if a player is surprisingly unhappy with their contract by sitting out this mandatory period. No live contact is allowed here, but this is where you’ll hear about how an offense looks versus a defense in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills.

Rookie programs (date yet to be determined)

Every team is allowed to bring in all rookies on the roster for a 7-week development program scheduled Monday-Friday during those weeks wherein rookies can receive special instruction and training as they on-board to life in the pros. There is one weekend in that 7-week window where rookies will be working for a special rookie mini-camp. Teams are allowed to start this 7-week development program as soon as May 15 (two weeks post-draft) but nothing official has been stated yet about when the Chiefs will hold their program.
