The Kansas City Chiefs should trade up for a quarterback

So we have now established that the Chiefs have to invest in a first round quarterback and that this is the perfect year for them to do it. I also mentioned that if they are going to invest in a first round quarterback that they don’t want to settle for other teams’ leftovers. They need to move up and take a quarterback that they want and believe in. So now let’s talk what the Chiefs will have to give up in order to move up in the draft.

If you look at the NFL trade value chart you can see what point values are assigned for which draft slots. This chart isn’t perfect and certainly not every draft day trade adds up using this chart, but it does give you a rough idea of what it might take to get something done. Here are the point values of K.C.’s picks and some combinations of picks that the Chiefs could package in order to move up.

Note: I’m giving their picks next year equal value to this year’s with the assumption that the Chiefs will be a playoff team again. Since K.C. picks so late this year, their picks next year can’t be worth much less.

KC’s 2017 first round pick = 680 points
KC’s 2017 second round pick = 310 points
KC’s 2017 third round pick = 136 points
KC’s 2018 first round pick = 680 points
KC’s 2018 second round pick = 310 points

Pick combinations and equivalent value:

KC’s 2017 first and third picks = 816 points = pick 21 or 22 overall
KC’s 2017 first and second picks = 990 points = pick 16 or 17 overall
KC’s 2017 first and second and 2018 second = 1290 points = pick 10 or 11 overall
KC’s 2017 first and second and 2018 first = 1670 points = pick 5 or 6 overall

So according to the trade chart it would only cost KC a third round pick in order to move up five or six spots in the draft if that’s all it took to get the guy they wanted. If they need to go a little higher, their second round pick this year should jump them from twenty-seven up into the mid to late teens. If they feel like they really need to move up they could include picks from next year.

I’m not sure I like the idea of giving up their first round pick next year but any of the other three combinations I would be fine with if it meant that they got a quarterback that they are excited about and believe in. This is a deep and talented roster and if you get a quarterback that you are convinced you can win with for this year’s first and second and an additional second rounder next year that is just fine with me.

So what do you think Chiefs fans? Do you agree that it is long overdue for the Chiefs to invest in a first round quarterback? Do you agree that this is the year to finally do it? Would you be comfortable in them using multiple picks to move up and get the guy that they really want? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

As always, thanks for reading and GO CHIEFS!
