Pre-camp Chiefs chatter: Forgetting Wilson
As cliche as it might sound, the one thing you can’t teach is speed. Wilson has it in spades. Conley’s faster, but Wilson has the edge when it comes to creating separation. He’s not as precise a route runner as Maclin, but can run the full route tree. He can also separate at every level on the field and has proven to be a consistent deep threat who can take the top off of a defense.
If he and Alex Smith can develop better timing, he may really become a weapon in the vertical game. He’ll have the opportunity with more time and reps in head coach Andy Reid’s West Coast offense.
That’s another reason why I think he’ll still have the edge over Conley. Wilson’s pulling into his third year in this system and won’t have the same learning curve. Althought, Streater does have WCO-familiarity and more service time to rely upon. He’ll pose the biggest challenge, but he’ll have to stay healthy to stave Wilson off. Only time can tell if he’ll be able to do that.
I’m not a betting man, but I’m convinced that Wilson won’t simply concede the job. I believe he’ll make a very serious push to remain the top receiver behind Maclin. We’ve seen him grow already and I expect him to make every effort to continue to mature in this system. Whether or not that will be enough remains to be seen.
Do you expect Albert Wilson to make a case for the WR2 job once training camp opens? Will Chris Conley walk off with the starting job opposite of Jeremy Maclin? Is Rod Streater the prohibitive favorite to become the other starter? Use the comment section below to weigh in. As always, we appreciate your readership and support!
