Stevie Brown: Hey, you saw how quick they were to send Jimmy Wilson packing.  While many have penciled Brown in as the replacement to Husain Abdullah, I think we need to have a “pump the brakes” moment on that.  The truth is, he’s going to be fighting for a spot on this roster.

Brown has been an ok player in the NFL.  Realistically, a backup and situational role is what suits him the best.  Don’t get excited…that’s actually a step down from what we had with Husain Abdullah, Tyvon Branch, and even Kurt Coleman.  All three of those players could easily start for a number of teams.

What lies in Brown’s favor though is an apparent lack of competition.  Daniel Sorenson is a fine Special Teams guy, and he does flash some talent…but nobody is really pining for him to be in a featured role like we used Abdullah in.  And after him, there really are no other safeties on this roster.

The Chiefs have noticed this as well, and to their credit have done some out-of-the-box thinking.  Despite the current narratives regarding the two players, the Chiefs apparently really like Jamell Fleming and Marcus Cooper.  Enough so that even with both players being replaced at cornerback, the team wants them on the roster.

And so both players have been moved into the safety mix.  I actually like this move a lot.  Both players have some talent and can be effective in certain roles.  This really isn’t all that different than when the team moved Ron Parker to safety.  Does that guarantee the same results?  Of course not, but it puts a new wrinkle into the mix.

So don’t be surprised if Brown gets the short end of the stick, especially if either (or both) Fleming or Cooper are able to show off some talent in that safety role.  Releasing Brown doesn’t do much for the salary cap, but it could be an open roster space for a player that can help out at another position, which is always important.
