5th Round

Cardale Jones – QB – Ohio St

Strengths: Ideal size for the position.  Tremendous athlete with both short area quickness and long speed to break away from defenders.  Cannon for an arm and can make every throw on the field.  Shows good composure in the pocket and is able to ignore the trash.  Very calm in the huddle.  Improved his footwork as the season went on and began to look the part of a pocket passer.

Weaknesses: Raw as a QB and his tape shows it.  Needs to continue working on his footwork.  Makes questionable decisions when throwing the ball and is not experienced in making pre/post snap reads.  If his first read isn’t there, will often tuck and run.  Needs to work on his vision inside the pocket.

The Fit: If the latest rumor is true, the Chiefs are trying to bring back Chase Daniel on a new contract.  That is a pretty big deterrent to believing there is any future in KC for either Aaron Murray or Tyler Bray.  That means a new project QB is a decent investment.  Jones will require a good bit of work, but it is almost all classroom stuff.  He needs to spend a season or two simply learning the ins and outs of being a QB in the NFL.

He has all the physical talent and the right kind of personality to take on the job.  If the Chiefs coaching staff can bring him along, the sky is the limit.  If not, a fifth round pick really isn’t a big deal anyways.
