5th Round

Justin Simmons – FS – Boston College

Strengths: Versatile defender who also has CB experience.  Smooth runner who accelerates very well and is able to keep up with receivers both down field and in short area routes.  Solid tackler and attacks the ball.  Has ideal size and length for the position.  Brings Special Teams experience which is usually a ticket to making a team.  Great head for the game, showing the ability to read and diagnose plays quickly.  Decisive in his movements.

Weaknesses: While he has good size, his frame doesn’t appear to be conducive to adding any more weight.  Can play tight at times which leads to a breakdown in technique.  Did not do well in Senior Bowl practices.  Overall tape shows more flashes of talent than a total package.

The Fit: As already stated, the Chiefs need to build up their depth in the secondary.  Simmons is not likely to beat out the likes of Ron Parker and Eric Berry, but his versatility could allow him to see the field in specialized roles.  And with already having Special Teams experience, Coach Taub will certainly appreciate this pick.
