NFL mock draft: Building in the trenches
By Ben Almquist
2nd Round
Vadal Alexander – OG/OT – LSU
Strengths: Tremendous natural size and strength. Surprising agility and quickness for an interior lineman. A versatile lineman who has started and excelled at both right tackle and left guard. Alexander also shows an excellent understanding of the game, being able to identify twists and stunts early. An absolute mauler who finishes his blocks and shows a nasty streak. Very good at the second level, walling off linebackers. Good balance and hand use that allows him to engage and control defenders.
Weaknesses: Biggest concern is in controlling his weight due to his natural girth. Can play RT in a cinch, but is far better suited for the interior line, often getting overwhelmed in space. Shows good base line technique, but needs to work on consistency. Two-dimensional pass-rushers will give him a hard time with speed to power techniques.
The Fit: When Alexander moved to the outside for his senior year, a lot of scouts thought it was a great chance for him to increase his value. However, it has become pretty clear that he is best suited at OG. An absolute mauler in the run game, Alexander’s abilities should transition well to the RG spot. He is a balanced blocker, showing talent in both the run and pass game. Should be able to compete for a starting position right out the gate.
