Gaines had a very promising rookie season, especially in the slot. His quickness and agility allowed him to track receivers closely, especially on underneath routes, something that hurt the Chiefs in their playoff loss to the New England Patriots. Would John Dorsey be willing to sacrifice Gaines’ ability in the slot and trust him on the outside and would he trust Nelson to take his place inside?

If the answer is yes, then Smith all of a sudden becomes expendable. If the answer is no, then Smith becomes vital to this team and to this offseason.

Dorsey’s priorities in resigning free agents will be what defines the next few months for the Chiefs. Who he brings in, who he drafts and where this team stands next season depends on such decisions. On the defensive side of the ball, who he chooses to resign and who he doesn’t could be, ultimately, determined by his evaluation of Gaines and Nelson.

So, what do you think, Addicts? Would you trust Gaines outside and Nelson in the slot with Howard resigned? Or would you rather see Gaines stay inside with Smith re-signed and Howard likely out the door? Thanks for reading and let us know in the comments below, and as always… GO CHIEFS!!
