Let’s get this out of the way; there is no quarterback controversy in Kansas City. Alex Smith had the best year of his career in 2015 and showed that he can lead the Chiefs deep into the playoffs. Still, there is a good chance that Chase Daniel is leaving and unless you have a ton of confidence in either Aaron Murray or Tyler Bray as the man of the future, a quarterback could be the pick.

At this stage of the draft process, we really don’t know who will be available at the 28th pick and who will be long gone. We can surmise that Jared Goff will be taken in the first five picks, and beyond that, who knows? The Chiefs could be looking at players including Paxton Lynch, Carson Wentz, Christian Hackenberg and Connor Cook. While none of them exactly screams franchise quarterback at this point, some years of development behind Smith and under head coach Andy Reid could be terrific.

Unless the quarterback is so much better than some of the other players on the board, Kansas City probably passes until later in the draft. Still, don’t underestimate the possibility that the Chiefs could go ahead and pull the trigger.
