A look ahead at the Chiefs offseason – Free Agency

Tight End:  John Dorsey has already made his first move at Tight End by retaining project player, Demetrius Harris.  I’m a fan of that move as I can see his progress and know that he still has a pretty high ceiling in potential.  Of course, this group is obviously anchored by Travis Kelce who appears to be on the brink of being a legit superstar in the NFL.  After that it’s a pair of guys in their rookie seasons with James O’Shaughnessy and Brian Parker.

Overall, this group is more potential that production.  And while there is a lot to like about the potential, I can’t help but feel the Chief would truly benefit from the presence of a guy with more than three years experience.  If there is one hole in Kelce’s game, it is his tendency to lose focus.  Anthony Fasano is dearly missed.

Options: A veteran addition should be in the mix here, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Chiefs decided to stick with its current group or just add another young talent in the draft.

  • Vernon Davis (Broncos) – He’s not the same Vernon Davis he once was, but that’s not the player we need.  What we need is a pro who has been around the block and understands what the defense is putting in front of him…and Travis.  He’s a guy who not only can communicate with Kelce, but has enough history with Alex Smith to help build a stronger connection between Smith and Kelce.  Ignore the stat sheet here.  The Chiefs need a short-term veteran to help our young guys grow…there may not be a better option than Davis.
  • Dwayne Allen (Colts) – The scenario in which I like this addition the most is if the Chiefs don’t feel they can bring in another talented Wide Receiver in Free Agency.  Dwayne Allen would be a great fit in this offense and provide another wrinkle to our gameplan.
  • Bear Pascoe (Lions) – One of the better blocking Tight Ends in the NFL, Pascoe is a journeyman who is usually a late addition wherever he goes.  He’s the kind of player that a team doesn’t have to commit to.  He can be signed and later released if the Chiefs feel like Harris, Shag, or Parker are up to the task.  Low risk, moderate reward.
  • Marcedes Lewis (Jaguars) – Much like Davis, Lewis isn’t the player that he once was.  But again, that’s not who we need him to be.  Marcedes Lewis is a consummate professional who is all to familiar with the lows of the NFL.  He’s still a quality blocker and would essentially be filling the same role here that he played this past season in Jacksonville.
  • Rob Housler (Bears)

    – Housler is a well-rounded Tight End who is essentially a poor man’s Heath Miller.  A quality blocker and decent receiver, he’s more the type of player you forget about until he makes a big play.  There is also some potential in him to become a more productive player on the field instead of the afterthought guy.
