NFL news: Around the league in 32 plays

3 of 4

Houston Texans: The Texans have placed quarterback Tom Savage on injured reserve.  The move is shrewd when considering their quarterback competition.  Savage is a talented prospect, but had no shot at starting.  This protects him on the roster without costing a roster spot.  His injury?  Extreme pain.  Yup.  The Texans have signed long snapper Jon Weeks to a contract extension in a move that has been very popular with the rest of the roster.

Indianapolis Colts: The Colts have cut former Chiefs tight end Sean McGrath.  McGrath sat out last season after informing the Chiefs he didn’t want to play football anymore, but returned this year.  Wide receiver Duron Carter, son of Chris Carter, was also released.  Carter has been highly touted for his skill set, but has serious questions about the mental side of his game.  The Colts also extended the contract of offensive lineman Anthony Castonzo.

  • Chiefs’ take: It’s unknown what was said between McGrath and the Chiefs leadership last year.  However, if the two sides can put that behind them, there is no doubt that the Chiefs could use McGrath’s talents this year.

Kansas City Chiefs: Chiefs general manager John Dorsey has shown some shrewdness akin to that previously mentioned of his former team the Packers.  The Chiefs have traded safety Kelcie McCray to the Seahawks for a 5th round pick.  The shrewdness?  Dorsey originally claimed Rishaw Johnson off of waivers from the Hawks, traded Johnson to Tampa for McCray, and has now gotten a fifth-round pick in return.

The Chiefs have placed offensive guard Paul Fanaika on injured reserve.  To fill his roster spot, they re-signed recently cut linebacker Dezman Moses. The Chiefs have also signed offensive lineman Jah Reid.  The Chiefs hope that Reid can put some of his troubles behind him and help out at either guard or tackle on the right side.

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins have placed rookie running back Jay Ajayi on Injured Reserve With Designation to Return.  This means Miami will not get him back until Week 9.

New England Patriots: Reggie Wayne’s time with the Patriots is already over.  The eventual Hall of Famer stated that he simply wasn’t enjoying himself at Patriots training camp.  This move hurts the Pats as they will be without Brandon LaFell who has been placed on the PUP list.  The Patriots did get some good news, as offensive tackle Nate Solder was signed to a contract extension.

New Orleans Saints: The Saints have released cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste.  The recent second-round pick has apparently not lived up to expectations.  He has now signed with the Lions practice squad.

New York Jets: The Jets have released quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson who were both signed to help replace Geno Smith.  The Jets have also placed cornerback Dee Milliner on Injured Reserve With Designation to Return, and will be without him until at least week nine.  Former Chiefs defensive end, Mike Catapano, has been signed to the Jets practice squad.

  • Chiefs’ take: An interesting aspect of Catapano going to the Jets PS is that should the Chiefs find themselves in need of DL help, they would be able to claim Catapano back to their 53-man roster.

Philadelphia Eagles:  The Eagles cut quarterback Tim Tebow.  It’s crazy to think that this is news.  It’s even crazier that he had a legit shot at making that roster.  They also traded away quarterback Matt Barkley.
