Chiefs training camp 2015: Breaking down the roster

4 of 12

This will be a fascinating group to watch. Jeremy Maclin is the top dog here, but after that everything is incredibly unclear. Maclin was brought into Kansas City on a five-year, $55 million contract to give Alex Smith a reliable weapon both on short and long routes.

Behind Maclin, we are talking about Albert Wilson, Chris Conley, Junior Hemingway, Frankie Hammond Jr., Jason Avant and De’Anthony Thomas, along with undrafted free-agent rookies. Conley is a third-round pick, so he is going to make the roster. It seems Wilson would have to be injured not to make the 53-man roster. Thomas is an absolute lock, so that gives us four locks immediately.

The question is who can take the other two spots? Hemingway is a lousy receiver but one of Kansas City’s best special teams players. Hammond Jr. has been terrible throughout his career, and any UDFAs are simply unproven. Avant likely makes the team because Reid is comfortable with him and he won’t drop the ball.

It will be interesting to see who starts opposite of Maclin in Week 1.
