2015 Offseason: Key Dates

March 7: Teams can negotiate with players who are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents, but the contract can’t be officially recognized until the first day of free agency (March 10).

March 10: The 2015 league year begins.

The top 51 salaries of each team must be under the 2015 salary cap ($143.28 million) before 3 p.m.

All 2014 contracts expire at 3 p.m.

2015 free agency and trading period begins.

April 20: The Chiefs can begin offseason workouts.

April 30–May 2: 2015 NFL Draft

June 1: If players are released/waived/traded on or after this date, any future (2016 onward) unamortized portions of signing bonuses will accelerate toward the 2016 season.

July 15: The last day that (Justin) Houston can agree to a multi-year contract with the Chiefs. The agreement must be done before 3 p.m.

After 3 p.m., Houston can only sign a one-year contract (tender) with Kansas City, and he can’t agree to an extension until after the Chiefs’ last regular-season game.

Mid-July: Rookies/first-year players are allowed to report to training a week prior to veterans.

Veteran quarterbacks and injured players can report to training camp five days prior to the first mandatory date for all other veterans.

Veterans, excluding quarterbacks and injured players, can report to training camp 15 days before the team’s first preseason game or July 15 (whichever is later).
