The Wide Receivers

I’ll keep this short. Does Dwayne Bowe occasionally make plays like the big 22-yard first down play that make you think he has what it takes to be a quality NFL WR? Yes, he does. That doesn’t excuse all the times he simply doesn’t get open. If you have a QB that doesn’t like to throw contested passes, then having a WR that can’t create separation is a problem. The Chiefs are in a terrible spot with Bowe for next season. His cap number is $14 million. He isn’t worth that, not even close. However, if I’m looking at the numbers right, if they cut him they still are on the hook for $9 million of that. So can they really get anyone better with the $5 million that they save in cutting him? I’m not sure.

As far as Jason Avant and Albert Wilson go, are they better than Donnie Avery, AJ Jenkins, Junior Hemingway and Frankie Hammond? Sure, but that doesn’t make them good. They belong on a NFL roster as role players. I would be fine with both Avant and Wilson being back in KC next season, but they should be AT BEST the #3 and #4 options, if not lower. The Chiefs WRs aren’t good enough and have to be upgraded this offseason.

Next up at the firing line….
