Friday’s status report, per 49ers.com:

San Francisco 49ers

  • Doubtful
    C Marcus Martin
  • Questionable
CB Tramaine Brock, T Anthony Davis, TE Vernon Davis, TE Vance McDonald, S Eric Reid, NT Ian Williams
  • Probable
S Antoine Bethea, WR Michael Crabtree, RB Frank Gore , DE Tony Jerod-Eddie, P Andy Lee

Kansas City Chiefs

  • Out
WR Donnie Avery, S Eric Berry
  • Questionable
    CB Marcus Cooper
  • Probable
RB Jamaal Charles, LB Tamba Hali, CB Sean Smith, RB De’Anthony Thomas, LB Frank Zombo

Obviously, a handicapped Chiefs defense will welcome any help that comes its way. If Anthony and Vernon Davis are sidelined, the Chiefs linebackers can breathe a brief sigh of relief.

Tramaine Brock is one of San Francisco’s starting cornerbacks, but his replacement, Perrish Cox, has pole-vaulted past expectations. So much so, Cox is currently Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) No. 2 corner. (And No. 1 is [drum roll]…Brandon Flowers.)

Also, while his name isn’t listed, Joe Staley suffered a knee injury last week. He returned to the game but had an uncharacteristically bad showing against Philadelphia’s Trent Cole (who’s having a career year).

Prior to Week 4’s injury, Donnie Avery was quietly enjoying a solid season. However, former NFL physician David Chao noted that surgery will scrap him from the lineup for at least four weeks. His presumed stand-in, Jenkins, was traded by San Francisco last year.

On a positive note, if De’Anthony Thomas makes his pro debut—and it appears he will—the Chiefs should, at minimum, have a revitalized return game.
