It is time for Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley to end his love affair with Jerheme Urban.

Urban’s simply not putting out.

I understand why the Chiefs brought Urban to Kansas City a year ago. He was a big receiving target that knew Todd Haley’s offense. The team was weak at receiver and while Urban would never likely be a star, he could have provided a decent forth WR option to go along with Dwayne Bowe, Chris Chambers and Dexter McCluster.

That’s right, Urban was brought to KC in 2010 to be the FOURTH WR option among last year’s WR group.

And now he’s starting opposite Dwayne Bowe.

The Kansas City Chiefs desperately need help at the wide receiver position. They have been so desperate for wideouts the last couple of years that they have been consistently turning over the scrap heap looking for a diamond in the rough.

They may have found one in Verran Tucker.

Tucker went undrafted out of Cal and spent the first half of the season on the practice squad until another undrafted WR, Jeremy Horne, was injured and released by the team. The Chiefs eventually re-signed Horne to the practice squad while Tucker got called up to the active roster.

Tucker’s first NFL catch was an 11-yard TD pass against the Oakland Raiders. The Chiefs would go on to lose that game in OT but Tucker’s catch in the back of the endzone was one of the game’s best highlights.

Tucker finished the season with 6 catches for 114 yards. He split time with Terry Copper and Chris Chambers.

Here is a pretty good video that shows some of Tucker’s skills. Hopefully he will put them to good use on Sunday.

That means some of the other wide receivers will have to step up. Chances are we will see Chris Chambers return to the lineup alongside Dwayne Bowe and Terrance Copper. My guess is that Chambers may be inserted as the slot receiver because Haley is probably happy with Copper, especially after he climbed the ladder last week and came down with a tough catch for a first down.

Still, there may be times when Haley wants to give one of his receivers a breather and in that situation he may turn to rookie WR Verann Tucker.

Tuckers was undrafted out of California. He was on the team’s practice squad until WR Jeremy Horne injured himself and was cut. Tucker was promoted to the main roster and Horne was added to the practice squad.

There has been some buzz coming out of practice about Tucker. He is 6-1 and 204 pounds so he could create a decent mismatch against a smaller corner.
