I’m not going to talk about the game last night. I’m not going to talk about the amazing defensive effort or the three interceptions thrown by Tyler Palko. No, I’m going to talk about the big picture outlook of the Chiefs QB situation. Last week the Kansas City Chiefs followed the same MO they have used for the better part of the last 30 years (and perhaps the entire history of this franchise) when it comes to their QB position, they signed a veteran free agent.

Now don’t get me wrong, when you just look at the Kyle Orton signing on its own, it’s fine. By this point, the pros and cons have all been spelled out both here at AA and all over the Internet and talk radio. I think the zero TDs and SIX INTs thrown by Tyler Palko in his two starts show that the Orton signing is at least worth a shot, but I want to talk bigger picture.

Now when I say bigger picture I don’t just mean looking forward to next season. That’s part of it, but I really want to scale back and look all the way back to 1983 when the Chiefs drafted Todd Blackledge in the first round of the NFL draft. That’s the last time the Chiefs really made a true investment in drafting and developing their own QB.

For those younger fans that may not know anything about the history of this club, to put it simply, Blackledge was a HUGE bust. It was in part because of his poor play, but even more so because of the QBs the Chiefs passed over to take him (namely Dan Marino and Jim Kelly).

That failed pick doomed then team president Jack Steadman who was replaced by Carl Peterson and would curse the Chiefs QB situation to this day.

I’ll give you the gory details after the jump:

In this tournament, each NFL squad will nominate two dubious contestants. For the Chiefs, my suggestions are Ryan Sims and Todd Blackledge. That being said, we are going to let you decide. Nominate two Chiefs’ draft busts in the comments section to participate.

My old man’s a cardiologist. My mom is a therapist. I’ve been covering the Chiefs for two-and-a-half years. Hell, I figured with all the epidemics floating around Chiefs Nation nowadays, who better to diagnose them than yours truly. Enjoy the first installment of the Addict’s Afflictionary, and brace yourselves for many, many more…

Post-Blackledge Stress Disorder – A condition that has tormented Chiefs fans ever since the Chiefs selected quarterback Todd Blackledge out of Penn State seventh overall in the 1983 NFL Draft. Blackledge became a monumental bust, and most Chiefs fans never recovered. The condition is typically defined as chronic paranoia when it comes to drafting a first-round quarterback, a voyage which almost every NFL team must eventually take.

The severity of this condition has worsened over the years. After former Chiefs GM Carl Peterson (1989-2009) refused to select a first-round quarterback during his 20-year tenure, Chiefs Nation has become much more resistant to the idea of their beloved team doing just that. Medical experts compare it to when a person becomes so obese they’d rather just accept their current state, instead of having the courage to step on a scale, accept the problem and take the proper measures to correct it. One of the surefire signs of PBSD is denial.

In recent years, PBSD has become so severe within the Chiefs Nation community that many fans openly stated that they preferred Brodie “Brokie” Croyle to Chad Pennington, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan, and more recently Tyler Thigpen to Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel and Matt Leinart.

Another recent turn in this chronic state of mental illness is delusional thinking. For instance, many fans currently think that new Chiefs GM Scott Pioli finding another Tom Brady or Matt Cassel in the final rounds of the draft is a mortal lock.

PBSD is a very serious condition. There is no current known cure for this ailment, although experts hope the Chiefs actually drafting or trading for a legitimate young franchise quarterback will eliminate all symptoms.

I just looked at the NFL news. Two of the headlines were: A.) Orton starting for Bears; and B.) Bengals close to bringing back Henry. Talk about Dumb and Dumber. But it got me thinking about the Chiefs’ biggest personnel mistakes. For me, there’s a lot of them, but almost nothing is worse than us trading back from a first-round pick to select Junior Siavii early in the second. At least Ryan Sims was highly touted. Even though I was only five, the drafting of Todd Blackledge over Dan Marino, Jim Kelly and John Elway, narrowly edges those gaffes out to take the cake. Starting Kris Wilson and Samie Parker for seasons–yes, plural, with an “S” at the end–also have to be up there. Kendrell Bell? Another owie that still burns bad.

Addicts, what do you think is the worst Chiefs’ personnel decision of all time?
