Monday is here and it is time for me to officially weigh in on the Chiefs draft. There have been mixed reviews among Chiefs fans on just how well the front office did last weekend. Overwhelmingly, the fans I have talked to seem to be thrilled with Berry, pretty happy with McCluster and Asamoah and totally baffled at the lack of action in the nose tackle and linebacker department.

I understand the feeling. I too was shocked as the Chiefs passed over Terrence Cody and
later, Cam Thomas during the draft. We have talked at length here on AA about the Chiefs needs at NT. While we didn’t all always agree on where NT should go on the priority list, we all did agree that it was a priority.

I have been sleeping on it and I still don’t have an answer as to why the Chiefs skipped the nose tackle position all together. I just don’t know. I do know, however, that Scott Pioli and Romeo Crennel are not stupid men. They know the importance of the position. They have broken down the tape of last year’s defense and they know more about what went wrong than we do. So while I would like to be raking Pioli and Co. over the coals right now like many around the blogosphere, I am going to give the benefit of the doubt right now. The offeason is still young and I anticipate KC will still make a move at the position.

Shortly after the weekends festivities, we took a reader approval poll and the most of our readers gave the Chiefs a solid B on their draft. Out of over 700 votes and counting, here is the breakdown:

B-370 votes or 49%
A-199 votes or 29%
C-148 votes or 20%
D-32 votes or 4%
F-6 votes or 1%

So 69% of Addicts gave the Chiefs either an A or a B and only 5% gave them a failing grade.

Well, after giving it much though, my grades are in and so is my reasoning…after the jump!

This is gonna be a quickie compared to the past, but I definitely wanted to jump on here on offer up my thoughts on round two. Paddy and I were just chatting, and I think we agree that the Chiefs should trade up and acquire a third second-round pick even if it costs us our third rounder (and more). Why? Because there’s three players in the second round the Chiefs really need.

1. OLB Sergio Kindle, Texas

It is a joke that this guy is still on the board. He’d rack up double-digit sacks for us next year guaranteed.I think he’s the best player available, and I hope that the rush to get Clausen and McCoy allows him to slip. I would trade up three picks to get him if we had to. He’s that talented.

2. WR Golden Tate, Notre Dame

The next DeSean Jackson? Maybe. With the Weiss connection and the obvious fit in the slot he’s a no-brainer. We need a field-stretcher, and he’s a perfect fit.

3. NT Terrence Cody, Alabama

There are some folks who think Cody, not Dan Williams, is the best NT in this draft. He could really make the 3-4 click for us as our anchor in the middle.

We get these three guys, hell, maybe even two of the three, and I think we are the favorites to win the AFC West. After a night of reflection, I think our O-line isn’t too bad. Ryan Lilja solidifies a line that gelled during the season’s second half, and Thomas Jones is an excellent blocker as well. Keep an eye on these three players.

The Chiefs look like they are going full throttle on the NFL Draft now as the free agent signings have slowed down and the draft talk has been heating up.

Bill Williamson is reporting that Okung is in Kansas City today and Mike Florio over at Pro Football Talk has stated that Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel will workout DT Terrence Cody personally.

Both of these moves make sense. While I don’t think the Chiefs should take Okung, he certainly won’t hurt their cause and he has a good chance to be available when they pick at #5.

As for Cody, I doubt the Chiefs are considering him a first round selection so they could be hoping he will fall to them in the 2nd round. I highly doubt that will happen but the Chiefs need to do their due diligence just in case.

I know a lot of you are hoping Alabama NT, Terrence Cody is available at the beginning of the 2nd round. However, when he was weighed in at the Senior Bowl, he tipped the scales at 370 pounds. Cody has always been a big boy but he is apparently about 15 pounds heavier than he was just a few weeks ago in the National Championship. You have to question his work ethic and commitment to staying in shape. Chances are, scouts are as well. I don’t think Cody would stand much of a chance passing Haley’s conditioning test.

I know the Chiefs need a NT but they need an athlete as well and as you can see from the picture there, Cody doesn’t look much like an athlete. You have to wonder how long he would hold up playing that weight. I don’t even know if “Body By Haley” could help him.

One thing is for certain, some team is going to take a chance on him. Sound off Addicts, should it be the Chiefs?
