The Kansas City Chiefs have sent DE Shaun Smith an offseason training program.

This could be significant because Smith is set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year starts in March.

Smith tweeted out the Instagram photo from his verified Twitter account.

Could this mean the Chiefs want to bring Smith Back?

I am not so sure. The program is voluntary and the team’s trainers may send it out to every player still under contract so they can stay in shape during the offseason. The trainers likely don’t know which players the team will end up retaining and so everyone probably gets the program.

Still, Smith thought it was significant enough to tweet out so it could be a good sign.

We will likely find out soon as John Dorsey begins negotiating with the agents of the players he wants to re-sign.

Do you want Shaun Smith back next season?

Kansas City Chiefs DE Shaun Smith is perhaps one of the most popular players on the team.

Fan love Smith for his play and antics on the field and for his personable demeanor off the field. Smith frequently engages with fans on Twitter. When the Chiefs failed to re-sign him following the 2010 season, KC fans were pretty upset. Smith ended up signing with the Titans but found himself a free agent following thee 2011 season. He remained so until the Chiefs re-signed him when DE Glenn Dorsey was placed on IR a couple of weeks ago.

During his time off, Smith continued to stay in shape, working out daily in case a team called and wanted his services.

Well now there is an eight-part training documentary of Smith working out.

We’ve got the first three parts for you below. It is a pretty interesting look at what NFL players need to do on a daily basis to stay on top of their game. I know that AA staffer Big Matt has been begging anyone who would listen for a Shaun “Perv” Smith training video for a while. It looks as though his wish is granted.

Remember: It’s a grind.

In case you were running out of reasons to watch the Kansas City Chiefs for the rest of the season (and believe me, we totally sympathize with you), Scott Pioli just gave you a big reason to tune back in.

Shaun Smith is back!

Smith, affectionately called “Perv Smith” by those of us here at Arrowhead Addict, has been a free agent all season. He was released by the Titans earlier this year.

The story was broken by Adam Teicher:

#Chiefs sign DL Shaun Smith for season’s final 8 games. Could mean Glenn Dorsey will be out for an extended period.
— Adam Teicher (@adamteicher)

Smith brings an attitude that the Chiefs have really been missing on defense. He is familiar with Romeo Crennel’s defense and is able to line up at nose tackle and defensive end. As Teicher suspects, this could mean the Chiefs will be without Glenn Dorsey in the weeks ahead. Dorsey re-injured his calf Thursday against the Chargers.

Perv is back. Offensive lineman around the NFL are out shopping for cups.

According to Adam Caplan, the Kansas City Chiefs have worked out DT Shaun Smith.

The Chiefs haven’t signed Smith yet and I don’t expect them to. They are pretty well loaded at DE/DT and I just don’t see them inking Smith to a deal before the season starts.

The reason for the workout may be to just get an idea of where Smith is at physically. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Chiefs told Smith to stay in shape and wait for a call.

Smith is on the wrong side of 30 but he played well in Romeo Crennel’s scheme when he was with the Chiefs in 2010. Should one of the team’s defensive lineman go down with a prolonged injury, Rome Crennel will probably give Smith a call.

Smith, also refereed to as “Perv” around here, was popular among fans when he was in Kansas City. His antics on the field and his openness to communicating with fans on Twitter quickly made him beloved.

Smith also brought a bit of attitude to the KC defense, something they could maybe use a bit of this season. Still, KC has a number of younger players along their line they are trying to develop so a Chiefs/Smith reunion may have to wait.

Former Kansas City Chiefs fan favorite Shaun Smith has been released by the Tennessee Titans.

Smith left the Chiefs in free agency last season after making a big impression on Chiefs Nation while on a one-year contract in 2010. Smith is perhaps best known for “allegedly” grabbing the crotches of various opponents.

A couple of weeks ago, Chiefs DE Shaun Smith was fined 10K for his…er…extra curricular activities on the field during a game against the 49ers. From AA, 2010:

Smith was accused 2 weeks in a row of grabbing another players genitals. This lead to a rash of great puns and jokes. Smith also was given a couple of great nicknames the best of which were “The Nutcracker” and “The Genital Giant.”

After the 49ers game, a video emerged that appeared to show Shaun Smith fall near Anthony Davis’ “crotchal region.” Davis then suddenly straightened up a little bit, briefly reached toward his “crotchal region” and then sucker-punched Smith as he fell to the ground. Davis claimed he was retaliating because Smith had tried to grab his family jewels.

Smith was then fined ten thousand dollars by the league for “inappropriately touching” another player.

Around here, we just referred to Smith as “Perv.”

Anyway, that is all in the past. Smith was also considered by most KC fans to have done a great job splitting time between DE and DT in Romeo Crennel’s 3-4 defense. Most fans wanted Smith to be re-signed however he went to the Titans instead on a three-year deal. Smith played in Tennessee’s 4-3 defense last season and had a sub-par year.

Now, he’s back on the market and Chiefs fans have taken to Twitter encouraging Smith, who interacted quite a bit with fans on social media when in KC, to return to the Kansas City.

Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel was asked about Smith earlier today.

“Shaun is my man,” Crennel said. “Shaun would love to be here, I’m sure, but we’ve got some guys on the team right now that they’ve worked pretty good and we feel decent about them, and then we’ll have to kind of look at it and see.

“I have not talked to Shaun yet, but Shaun might give me a call here shortly, but Shaun is a good guy and I like Shaun a lot. I’ve had him on two different teams, so we’ll see how that plays out as well.”

I doubt the Chiefs will bring Smith back. They are pretty set at both DE and DT these days. Smith is 31 and the Chiefs have younger players in Poe, Powe, Toribio, Bailey, Jackson and Dorsey. There just doesn’t seem to be much room for Smith at DE or DT.

Still, you never know.

What do you think, Addicts? Do you want Perv to come back or would you rather keep the defensive lineman the Chiefs already have?

Before I delve into the title subject matter, I want to first say a few words about our remaining rookie holdout. There are now only 4 unsigned rookies in the league, 3 of them of 1st rounders. Guess which one of those 4 was not a 1st round pick?

Justin, dude, are you freaking high? Probably shouldn’t answer that, huh? You were a 3rd round pick for reasons that nobody but yourself are to blame. Own up to it, live with it, move on; you are, without question, not making life any better for yourself by following the course you are on.

At this point, there is no acceptable explanation for Justin Houston’s hold out unless he’s not ready, physically, mentally, and/or emotionally, to play football in the NFL. If that is the problem, then I really have to start questioning whether this is a guy I still want on my team. If that’s not the problem, then he is just hurting himself as a result of some very flawed reasoning. Rookie salaries are now more slotted than ever and given where he was taken in the 3rd round, there can be no financial aspect to this deal that is worth quibbling over.

Honestly, I’m beginning to feel both sorry and embarrassed for Scott Pioli about this pick.

Kelly “Queequeg” Gregg after the bounce.

Since both players decided to leave in free agency, we can conclude one of two things.

The were offered more money to play elsewhere, so they left

They just did not want to play for the Chiefs anymore

If I were a betting man, I’d say it is #1. Smith, who is very vocal on Twitter, seemed to love playing in Kansas City. Edwards, however, has always been pretty quiet.

There are other possibilities, of course. Edwards and Smith may have liked the cities the were moving to better, the moves may have put them closer to family or they may have been promised more playing time. They also may have been offered longer contracts and thus more security.

In the end though, these things usually come down to money.

We lost not only two good players this week in Brian Waters and Shaun Smith but two of our best nicknames in Perv Smith and Sweet Ron Edwards.

It’s dark times here at AA. Dark times.

While I wholeheartedly disagree with the Chiefs letting Smith go, I am going to wait and see what their next move is before I rake anyone over the coals.

But this post isn’t about that. It is time to put our anger and feelings of loss aside to celebrate Shaun “Perv” Smith. Not just for what he did for us on the field, but also for the entertainment he provided us off the field.

Perv, this one’s for you. (HUGE props to CTchiefsfan for thinking of this)

This is a terrible, terrible mistake by the Chiefs. Smith was a big part of their defensive improvement last year. For them to fail to come to terms on a reasonable deal with him when the have so much money is unconscionable.

Smith later tweeted:

autumnsjs90 shaun smith
Nashville here I come going to gym to get this workout on then head home then to airport http://yfrog.com/h0t61epyj

I am kind of speechless. i thought for sure Smith was coming back. I even posted it this morning. Needless to say, that post has been removed.

I am crushed. No idea what song we are going to use for our So Long Perv post. Any ideas?

(First, let me get this out of the way: If you are anything like me you don’t even care about the lockout anymore. The last couple of months I try to ignore it. I act like it is not even going on. Why? Because I know it is just a sham. There will be football this year because the same greed that is causing the players and owners to fight over money will compel them to play when the time comes so that they do not lose any money. It is simple math. It is impossible for you to disagree. I dare you. )

In any event…

I was perplexed when the Kansas City Chiefs took Miami DE Allen Bailey in the third round of the 2011 draft. Don’t we already have depth at DE? We have a stud in Glen Dorsey, a serviceable (and expensive) DE in Tyson Jackson, a stud in Shaun Smith, and a developing stud in Wallace Gilberry. Do we even have room for the 285 pound 6’3 Bailey? Sure, you can never have enough depth, right? But to use a third round on a possible third stringer seems high, doesn’t it? Unless….

More after the jump…

note: I’m writing this under the assumption that free agency will eventually happen. Maybe not the safest assumption, but these days I’m always just one bad thought away from five paragraphs worth of owner-bashing. If I want to talk about the team at all, I need to ignore the CBA entirely for this post. But let me just say one thing: no matter how these negotiations play out, the NFL owners are despicable parasites. I’ve known that for years, and these past few months have only confirmed my beliefs. In a way, I’m glad its come to this. At least everyone’s cards are on the table now. These owners aren’t local heroes. Far from it. Clark Hunt is nothing more than Kansas city’s own personal Montgomery Burns.

Every offseason, we all have a laundry list of wants and needs. I would imagine every NFL fan does. We look at what we perceive as our team’s weaknesses and assume they’ll be addressed. In reality, of course, it never works out that way. The coaches see things differently than us, each draft class is strong in some areas and weak in others, our needs don’t match with the available free agents, players have their own agendas, etc., etc. Rarely does the team operate like we want them to, and in the end thats probably for the best. Most of us don’t really know what we’re talking about.

Of course, as Chiefs fans, issues are complicated further. However you feel about it, the fact is we consistently spend less than virtually every other team. The Chiefs can still attempt to fill all of their holes, but many of them will have to be filled with question marks. Because sure things are rare. And if I remember my econ, rare things are expensive.

For instance, this last offseason NT was an obvious weakness. The Chiefs seemed to address that issue somewhat by bringing in Perv Smith. Then he ended up starting at defensive end and NT, essentially, remained a weakness. Receiver was a weakness and our question mark solution was Jerheme Urban. Center was Wiegmann. Guard Lilja. Running back Jones. Some of these guys worked out and some didn’t, but they all had one thing in common: they were all question marks. Wiegmann and Jones were old, Lilja had just been cut, Urban was a backup, and Smith was a journeyman. This is the type of free agent class we can expect as Chiefs fans. A class full of question marks.

When the question marks work out, as some did this year, a free agent class can be very productive. Lilja was great, Perv was good and Wiegmann was good enough. Jones debacle aside, that was a good class. Filled three needs. Now think about the 2009 class. Corey Mays, Mike Brown, Mike Goff, Terry Copper, Zach Thomas. Have you thrown up yet? Yeah, thats what a free agent class looks like when the question marks don’t pan out.

expectations for this free agent class in the full entry:

The Kansas City Chiefs brought top unrestricted free agent Shaun Rogers to Kansas City for a visit yesterday and the two sides are finishing things up this morning according to a tweet from Rogers.

Rogers took to Twitter this morning to give his follower a brief update on his plans.

Let’s see…had a good dinner @ capital grill w/ Romeo & anthony pleasant…those 2 good men 4sho

Pleasant is the team’s defensive line coach and Crennel coached Rogers in Cleveland so it make sense that this trio would have dined together.

Rogers then announced that he planned to finish up with the Chiefs this morning before heading to New Orleans to meet with the Saints.

Rogers:

I 4got to tell every1 good morn…but to finish up here in KC then its off to tha NO to see what them saints talkn abt…thx KC enjoyed my breif stay never kno might be bck 1 day

The Kansas City Chiefs seem to be racking up the awards and accolades this season. Jamaal Charles, Matt Cassel, Brian Waters and Dwayne Bowe are all going to be playing in the Pro Bowl this Sunday. Tamba Hali was selected to replace James Harrison but had to bow out due to injury issues. Charles and Bowe were named All-Pro’s and now, Derrick Johnson and Ryan Lilja have been named All-Joes.

USA Today has released their annual All-Joe team and two Chiefs made the grade. The All Joe team was created in 1992 to and named after who else, a Kansas City Chief by the name of Joe Phillips. USA Today felt Phillips was overlooked for his grunt work in the trenches while stats like Derrick Thomas and Niel Smith got all the glory. Thus, they decided to do a yearly honor of the guys who make a difference but don’t always get noticed.

It makes it all the more fitting then, that this year Derrick Johnson and Ryan Lilja will represent the Chiefs on the All-Joe team.

Many Kansas City Chiefs fans subscribe to the idea that games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage. I happen to be one of those fans. And I believe that axiom becomes doubly true when one faces the Baltimore Ravens like the Chiefs do on Sunday at Arrowhead.

To say that the Ravens play physical football is a little bit of an understatement. Smash mouth football is more accurate. Whether it is linebacker Ray Lewis laying a hit on a player, or running back Ray Rice running over a player, power is brought to every aspect of the Ravens game play.

Nowhere does power come into play in the NFL more than in the trenches. The offensive line uses its power to protect the quarterback or open running lanes. The defensive line uses their power to collapse the pocket and corral opposing running backs. It is what occurs at the line of scrimmage that is the first step to either making or destroying a successful offensive play. That’s why the play at the line will either make or break the Chiefs on Sunday.

Kansas City Chiefs DE Shaun Smith may be about to find himself in trouble.

He just tweeted the following to Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco:

autumnsjs90 shaun smith

@ochocinco who told u to write about me in your book fag

You may remember Larry Johnson getting fined and then cut for using homophobic slurs on Twitter. I don’t think it will come to that but don’t be surprised if Smith gets fined for this.

Smith is known for his trash talking but he usually does his mouth running on the football field and not on Twitter.

This isn’t the first time Smith has been in hot water. Back when he played for Romeo Crennel and the Browns he punched then QB Brady Quinn in the face and this season he was accused of grabbing opposing players genitals on multiple occasions. The league tried to fine Smith for the alleged genital grabbing but the DE won his appeal because the video evidence was inconclusive.

I just don’t see any way that the NFL looks kindly upon this. Not a smart move for Smith to make the day after the Chiefs clinch the AFC West.

Update: Smith isn’t finished tweeting. I guess I will just keep adding them until it is over.

Ocho responded:

ochocinco Chad Ochocinco
@autumnsjs90 you the one grabbing peoples pee pee under the pile not me you, your new name is the pee pee snatcher, LMAO

Then Smith:

So wait, the Chiefs actually are a good team now? When did this happen? I feel like this team totally re-writes its story every few weeks. It’s like one of those choose-your-own-adventure books.

After the Buffalo/Oakland/Denver three game stretch, I thought any delusions about us being a legit team could be safely put to rest. I chided myself for letting this team trick me into thinking they were ready to contend. A win over Arizona at home didn’t change anything for me. That was a game almost every team in the NFL would’ve won.

This week was different. Seattle may not be good, but they’re not terrible either. I think we can safely call them average. Beating an average team on the road doesn’t make you a Super Bowl contender, but it does mean something. You know who scores 42 points against average teams on the road? Good teams. Yesterday, the Kansas City Chiefs showed they can be a good team

This was Matt Cassel’s best game of the season. I know some of you have been clinging to your bizarre insistence that he was great against Denver, but you’re probably the same people who think Tyson Jackson is right on track. We can all get on the same page about what we saw yesterday. Cassel was damn-near perfect. When he escaped from trouble and rolled out to find Dwayne Bowe on third down, I felt like I was seeing a new man. That was the best play I’ve ever seen him make. He looked like a pro bowl quarterback.

Before the season started I wrote that the Chiefs’ best chance of success would be to turn back the clock not to the halcyon days of the 90s, but to the early-to-mid 2000s. I thought this team would have some similarities to the Vermeil years. Then the season started, the defense carried a bumbling offense, and I looked like an idiot.

Redemption for your boy Big Matt after the jump

A couple of weeks ago, Chiefs DE Shaun Smith was fined 10K for his…er…extra curricular activities on the field during a game against the 49ers.

As I am sure you have heard, Chiefs DE Shaun Smith has been accused of grabbing an opponents “crothchal region.”

Smith has denied said claims but a recent video shows what appears to be Smith caught in the act. Although you can’t see exactly what happens here, the 49ers player appears to suddenly grab at Smith’s arm and then takes a swing.

I love Smith’s attitude and I love that he tried to get in his opponents head. That being said, he had better cut it out. This is something that could get him tossed from a game and with Tyson Jackson being injured, we need him.

Smith is playing just fine. He doesn’t need to resort to er low ball tactics.

The offseason is just about over for the players. If the only heavy lifting they have done in the offseason is with their forks then they are in deep trouble. If the only running they have done includes the words “beer” and “run”, and in that order, then they are in even deeper trouble. Shape up or ship out is the new regime’s mantra.

You have to be the dumbest player in the world, or have been living under a rock to not know that you had better report to Todd Haley’s training camp in shape; really good shape. As you all know, a very big deal was made last year about Todd Haley’s conditioning test. Warnings were issued, yet players like Dwayne Bowe and Glenn Dorsey failed to take heed and failed the conditioning test. They were in Todd Haley’s dog house right from the get go. This is a place you do not want to be. Failing the test means that you do not run with the ones, twos, or even the threes. Instead you run with Richard Simmons in Fat Camp, otherwise known as No Man’s Land, instead of training camp.

As training camp approaches, I wonder who will fail the test. There will be no announcements about it, but when Bob Gretz, Josh Looney, or even you (if you plan on attending camp) report who is not with the team and on the side lines, then you will have the answer. My hope is that no one will fail the test. But I have a few hunches (guesses really) about who will fail the test which include three veterans, one draft pick, and undrafted free agents.

More after the jump

Our Rushing Defense sucks and so does your girlfriend. Yep, I just said that.

We had the 31st ranked rushing defense last year and what have we done to remedy the situation? Not much at all. Is Scott Pioli in denial? Is he seriously going to go into next season with the same players as last (save Shaun Smith)? The same rushing defensive players who ranked next to last a year ago and the year before that? He really wants to tie his legacy to Derrick Johnson, Corey Mays, Ron Edwards and the like? It is like a bad dysfunctional relationship that you hope will get better but never does; which brings me to the topic of your girlfriend(s):

ILB Derrick Johnson reminds me of the girlfriend who is a tease. Year in and year out, she flashes potential, but is never consistent, and sometimes even fails to show up. You keep telling yourself to let her go, and when you do, that is when she shows you her best. You bring her back, only to find that she really is not that great; you let her go again and boom she surprises you once more, you bring her back, and she fails you again. Rinse and repeat you might say. This girlfriend drives you crazy.

More after the jump.

The more I think about the Chiefs draft the more I wonder what they are planning to do to acquire a true starting nose tackle.

Currently the position is manned by Ron Edwards, who while doing an admirable job last season, is not the guy the Chiefs need in the middle of their defensive line.

Pioli brought in former Cleveland Brown Shaun Smith this offseason but Smith appears to be nothing more than a backup brought in for depth.

Most of the veteran free agent nose tackles were resigned quickly this offseason, proving how much teams value the position. The 3-4 nose tackle often has to deal with double and even triple teams. He is a space eater there to clog up the middle of the defensive line to allow the linebackers behind him to make plays. It is a thankless job without much glamour. It takes a tough, nasty fellow to be an NFL nose tackle.

It is dead out there today on the Chiefs news front. The most exciting news around the NFL has been more boring labor negotiation talk, bickering over retired player benefits (snore) and Ben Roethlisburger still being a dirtbag.Thank God for the NCAA Tournament which has been filled with excitement thus far. You can catch all the games just by launching the player we have right here on AA’s main page. K State is playing right now in case you didn’t already know.

On the Chiefs, I have been wondering and wondering all day about Shaun Smith. I have this weird feeling that the Chiefs aren’t going to draft a nose tackle. I know, crazy right?

More incoherent rambling and wild theories after the jump.

From Pro Football Talk:

The all-time PFT leader in posts-per-tackle, defensive lineman Shaun Smith is visiting the Chiefs this week, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

No deal has been reported, but Smith is clearly excited about the possibility. He’s already changed his Twitter avatar to the Chiefs logo.

Smith was not tendered a contract by the Bengals last week. He’s played with three teams in six seasons, including two stints with Cincinnati.

Kind of funny he changed his Twitter logo without being signed. You have to like his enthusiasm.
